Linn Run - Westmoreland Co - 11/20/2016

I fished Linn Run this morning in the cold and snow this morning from 7:30 to 10:30. I planned to use a new 3 weight setup that I recently got and I was really pleased with how it handled in the wind. I managed to catch five brookies and I missed about five more. The water flow was good, clear and cold. It does seem like this stream is recovering well from the harsh summer and really low flows. I started out fishing with a tandem rig with a cream color green weenie pattern with a prince nymph dropper. I picked up one the weenie and one on the prince. After a while I switched to a two weenie rig with a green and a light brown weenie. The next three took the brown weenie. All flies were size 16.

Other than having to clear the ice out of the guides and slipping on some leaves, it was a great morning to be out. I do enjoy summer weather, but I do really enjoy being out fishing during a snow fall.

Nice report. That's good to hear. I have 5 days off starting Thanksgiving and I'm going to try to fish the Laurel Highland gemmie streams everyday I can. I've been giving them a break the last 4-5 months between that bad summer and the spawn, so I'm ready to get back at bow and arrow casts and 6" fish lol. I'll definitely be at Linn Run at least one of those mornings.

Glad to see some water back in the stream! What section of the stream did you fish? I was out that way back in September and it was bone dry throughout most of the park.

Linn Run is one of my favorite winter streams. Even when the water is in the mid 30*s, the trout still seem to be active.

Glad to see you had some success. The brookies up north seemed to slow down a bit. I fished Linn a couple months ago and had a lot of fun. Easy access and can get in and out quickly and on to the next stream.

Steveo27, The section that I fished was from below flat rock to about a half mile upstream from the parking lot at Adam's Falls parking.

Have any of you guys had any experience upstream of the Adam's Falls parking area up to the State Park office? I always seem to have better luck when I fish from Flat Rock to Adam's Falls... I was just wondering if this is everyone else's experience.

Tztrout, thanks for noticing the reel. I just picked it up from "The Fly Shop." They were marked down from $189 for $89! I picked up a 7'8" Echo Edge 3 wt to pair with it. I really like the setup - the rod had enough backbone to punch through the wind that was blowing on Sunday morning. The reel is sweet too, it's silent and seems to be pretty sturdy. I really don't care for the drag knob, if it were a little better it would be WAY better. But, the drag is a complete non-factor when fishing for Linn Run brookies!

I usually park near the park office and fish upstream above the park.
