Since my favorite smallie waters were chocolate milk today, I decided to hit the Letort. It was overcast the whole time with a slight breeze and some drizzle early on. Air temp upper 60s low 70s. Got to the lower end of the stream around 11 and just observed for a while. Didn't notice any risers, so I started with a bead-head nymph under the banks. On like my 5th cast, I hooked into a ginormous brownie. Like they tend to do, it dove straight for the grass. I tried to turn it, but it was haulin', and was into the weeds in a second. I kept the pressure on, and it came out and shot under the bank. That's when I felt the dreaded give in the rod and my fly shot back into the air. After catching my breath, I checked my line. I thought my line snapped, but it was actually my hook! That's the first time I lost a fish to a broken hook. I soldiered on (after promising myself to invest in better hooks), and came to a section of stream teeming with hoppers. So I tied on a little foam hopper that I had tied up about a week ago and cast to a likely lie. Wham! A nice 12 inch brown came to hand. I though there might be another in the hole, so I made another cast up. There was a subtle take, and I set the hook. This fish was nicer, I could tell. A few minutes later, I had a beauty of a letort brown at my feet. Could this day get any better? I got my answer in the form of a couple more nice browns. No matter how many times I fish this stream, I will always come back because I know days like this are possible!

I've never been up to the letort, but I remember seeing some stuff about sink holes...is there an area of this stream that I should avoid?

I believe the sink holes of recent concern are up near the quarry off Bonnybrook. And I believe there was a workday a month or two ago to re-mediate them.

Correct.
One should always watch one's step when fishing the Letort - not because of sinkholes but rather just the soft, unstable bank edges. This condition worsens in summer. Take your time. I always recommend a wading staff to probe wet spots in the meadows.

I have been brought to my knees by Lee-Tort in more ways than one.

Perhaps this is a stream I should explore...given its only 40 mins away!

Sipe,
If you've never fished the Letort before, this is good advice. It's not like the freestone streams most people are used to fishing. When I was there Saturday, there was about 4 inches of water in all the meadows, which makes travel even more tricky. Just take it slow and stay back from the stream as far as you can.

Your results certainly were the exception and not the norm. Nice work! An overcast/rainy/cloudy day certainly works in your favor. When the sun is high and mighty, fughetaboutit!

And navigating the banks of the Letort...yeah, what they said. Take it one step at a time and if you feel a sinking feeling, you're probably sinking!

^ Geo is right. Watch you step!

Klingy - Congrats! those are some beautiful fish from a beautiful stream!

All - I have posed this question to others with mixed results:

Is it illegal to float the Letort in a Kayak? If not, why don't people float it?

I know its probably a stupid question but I am just curious.

Tim,
Floating Letort isn't really practical. The stream is too small with too many obstructions, not to mention how skittish the fish are.

10/4

I love fishing it but I am fat and sink in everywhere.....maybe I can invent a snow shoe style wading boot?

LOL....Now that would be fun to watch. You could strap a pair of old guitars to your feet. :-D

Actually, I think Vince Marinaro experimented with snowshoes for walking on the banks of the Letort. Not sure how they worked out for him though.

I bought snowshoes for (trying) to wade soft flats in the Florida Keys. Didn't work.

I thought about trying them on Letort but the meadow grass is so thick and tall that it would be almost impossible to walk.
