Well I finally got to fish the Letort for the first time today thanks to SBecker. I've been wanting to fish this stream since January but my wife told me I wasn't allowed to fish the Letort by myself because of the sinkholes. So I met up with SBecker around 2:00 and we headed out. After hearing all the stories about how selective and spooky these fish are I was mentally prepping myself for the first skunk of the year. Imminent skunk or not I was excited to fish this historical gem. We stopped here and there making a few casts to some fish with no luck. Had a few of those really nice Letort browns chase my streamers which got my blood pumping but they just wouldnt comit. After every refusal I kept telling myself its gonna get better when the sun goes down but that only last so long then frustration starts to set in. After 4 or 5 hrs with no fish Becker had to leave and I decided to stay and try to crack this nut. Well after an hour or so going at it solo with nothing happening I was thinking mabey I should have left when Becker did when I noticed a fish rising along the far shore. So I watched him for a few minutes to get a berring on him and devise a plan of attack. We saw a few fish rising here and there during the day but neither of us could figure out to what. We saw some caddis and a few SMALL sulfurs so i decided on a size 16 sulfur. Made a few casts to that fish without even a look when I saw another fish 2 feet to the left of the fish that I saw rising. So I made my cast got a good drift and there he was running thru the weeds with my fly stuck in his mouth. After trying to get him out of the weeds for what seemed like forever I went in after him and got him in the net! This was by far the most rewarding trout i've caught to date. After getting a pic of him in the net I tried to get a classic Letort brown pic with him in the weeds but he wasnt having it and away he went. With a smile on my face I fought thru the mud and made it back to shore. I fished my way down stream and saw a few fish hugging the weeds so I put on a scud and...... another fish and it was a nice one but again right in the weeds he went so again I went in after him this time it was a big sucker. Sucker or not it really got my heart ripping. Ended up getting another smaller sucker a short time later but no more trout. All in all a frustrating day but twice as rewarding so I was very happy. I wiil be back to the Letort again soon. :-D
