Letort Spring Run Cumberland County 3/7/14

I fished the entire Hertitage Area from 7am until 4pm.
At first the water was a bit off color but started to become clearer by around 9am.
Morning fishing was rough but did have 5 solid takes on a large sculpin but only landed 2 fish.
Around 10am fish started midging and I caught some on a BWO #18.
At 12pm BWO's in a size 18 began coming off.
The birds noticed more than the fish but by days end I caught a total of 13 fish.
One very large fish was taking them but unfortunately all he did was refuse me. I was down to 6x and tried various patterns of BWO's. After a bit I rethought what I was doing because the size of the fish made me nervous about using 6x. I went back to 4x and played with him for a bit until he stopped rising.
Better to lose that battle than harm the fish I figured.

It was nice to finally get into some dry fly action and especially on the Letort. This trip made me realize how much I enjoy my 5wt Spring Creek and dry flies. Can't wait until the action really heats up.

Greg if you read this, how did you make out? I enjoyed talking with you and having that ladies dog scare the $&@* out of us.

I can report that the BWO's came of yesterday as well. We fished from the park up to Vince's bench. I can't report any fish brought to hand. They are definitely some spooky fish. I fished the Letort once before, very briefly, about 15 years ago. My friend had never fished it. We both expected to be humbled and we were. We fished from about 9-1. We saw few fish from the park until about 100 yds downstream of the 81 bridge. From that point up to the bench we saw good numbers as well as a couple of really good ones. We definitely didn't crack the code.

Likely your issue was fishing behind me.
I started at the park also but came back once I hit that small posted stretch before the middle school. I turned around and parked my car at a local business I have permission to park at and then went from where I stopped up to Bonnybrook Rd. I can tell you from the 81 bridge up past the bench a few 100 yards is where I caught most my risers.

I had to have just missed you.

Sorry, I don't think I was clear. We were there on Sunday. I don't think anyone fished ahead of us until we got up to 81. I'm afraid we have to blame it on our fishing skills rather than someone beating us to it.

The few risers we saw were actually under the bridge and just downstream. I didn't actually get to cast to any of them.

Hit the Letort on Monday with some other members of the forum. We fished both lower Letort and FFO: BWOs were seen but they were sparse and the fish were not rising to them. Just a matter of unlucky timing.

With last nights and today's rain will Letort or Big Spring be fishable?

They should be fishable, the lower ends might get murky a bit, but clear in a few hours.

Remember that Big Spring is ATW below Nealy Rd (the bottom of the FFO) and is closed to fishing this month.

Try a Big Spring Baetis. I believe I may have showed you this pattern once.
