Letort Spring Run, Cumberland County, 02/22/2014

I introduced a friend to the Letort today in hopes of getting him attached to his first Letort Brown Trout. I explained to him that it took me about seven trips before I was able to hook one, so I did not want him to get his hopes too high. As many of you know, the Letort is a stream that certainly makes you pay your dues.

In terms of conditions, the water was a moderate flow, and it had a lot of color to start, but it cleared up as the day progressed. I did not get a stream temp, but I expect that it was a little cooler than usual given all the run off. The weather was nice, aside from the fact that it was a blue bird, not a cloud in the sky, 50 degree day, and we were fishing the Letort. I saw many midges, a couple stoneflies and sparse olives hatching, but I did not spot a single riser.

In terms of fishing, I showed my friend my favorite streamer approach for the Letort. Throwing long downstream casts with black and olive unweighted buggers, and letting them dip into the weed channels during the retrieve. We had a period from about 1000am-1200pm when we had a lot of strikes. Between the two of us, I would say we had 12 swipes/short strikes. I took two beautiful brownies, one of which was about 13 inches with the typical Letort sparse spot pattern. My friend had one of those "pay your dues days" on the Letort, although he did hook up briefly with two different fish. In all, it was a great day on one of my favorite streams.

Nice report. That is indeed the typical sparse spot brownie that one expects to see in the upper Letort - one of the best examples I think I've ever seen.

I was in Boiling Springs briefly today and got a bit of fishing in. Had considered heading to Letort - sorry I missed yuh.

My girl and I fished the letort from daybreak to 10:30. I saw you guys as we were leaving. The stream looked great today and fished rather well. I caught 5 on sculpins, missed a few others and lost a big one in fox's meadow. Beautiful day to be out there. If I would have known it was you, I would have stopped to say hi.

We would have stayed longer to see if the olives were gonna take off but decided to go poke around pine grove furnace state park instead.

yeah, you didn't miss much, I worked my up from town between 1 and 3ish and saw all of one olive in the air...and of course, not a single rise. Was nice to get out at least.

I fished the lower letort from about noon till dark on Saturday. I was also hoping for the olives to make an appearance. I did see a decent amount of midges, but only sparse olive activity. Spotted a handful of rises throughout the day, but nothing consistent. I had a few takes on a sculpin, but unfortunately was unable to hook up.

The skunk was rough, but It did feel nice to get a bit of sunburn in 50 degree weather.
