I went out Saturday morning to the fabled Letort Spring Run arriving just after sunrise. It was a little colder and wetter than expected but I couldn’t wait to get back to the Letort, as it’s been several years since the last time I was there.
I did more exploring than fishing, stopping at various points of access from the headwaters in Bonny Brook to the mouth. The stream is much larger than I expected near the mouth. I did spot one small trout about 6 inches occasionally rising near the mouth to what looked like some very small white midges that were buzzing around on the surface. I tied on an 8x tippet and a size 32 CDC oiler puff white dry and halfheartedly tried for him somewhat hoping he would take it but simultaneously hoping he wouldn’t take it, as I want my first Letort brown on a dry to be a more memorable trout than a 6 inch trout.
I eventually tied on a size 6 muddler minnow and worked a few sections in the Bonny Brook area and managed four browns between 8 to 12 inches and managed to move one large brown that probably was close to 20 inches. I was dead drifting my muddler in the small, deep channels created by the vegetation and up from the deep depths out he came to closely inspect my offering but unfortunately, it was not appetizing and he refused it and retreated back to the bottom. I switched to a smaller cressbug and waited several minutes before casting again hoping something smaller might be more appealing but whatever caused the old wily guy to refuse the muddler gave him a severe case of lock jaw or indigestion because I never saw him again. It really wasn’t a day for extended fishing but it was a great day to get out and explore the stream. I probably will fish more in the lower section as the weather gets nicer.
If anyone can help me on this it would be appreciated. Where is Fox’s and Marinaro’s meadow? Also, there looks like there is a small dirt road and parking lot on Spring Garden Road but I am not sure if that is private or public and I did not want to drive in to find out? If anyone knows the answer that would be much appreciated.
