Letort Spring Run, Cumberland Co., 03/14/2015

Time Fished: 0800-1130 then 0230-0430pm

Weather: Cloudy and drizzling throughout the day. It was in the mid to lower 40s but the air was brisk and it felt cold out.

Water Conditions: Good looking streamer water in the morning. It was off colored and a bit high, but it cleared up a bit throughout the day. Typical mid to low 50 temps.

Hatches: Lots of grey midges in the afternoon along with a strong BWO hatch size 18/20. Not a ton of risers, but plenty enough to keep things interesting.

Techniques: We started out stripping streamers in the morning with minimal success. Nymphing scuds produced a couple of fish for me in the morning. We took a quick confidence builder trip to the "Run" around lunch and hit about 7 fish a piece in an hour on san juan worms and zebra midges. Then we returned to the Letort for the afternoon hatch and were greeted with rising trout. My buddy was able to land his first Letort Brown on a size 20 BWO dry and I took several more to round out my day at 5 Letort fish all from the Heritage water. A great time was had!!!

P.S. Bobert, I just saw your PM when I logged on tonight and I hope you do great tomorrow. The Heritage section was pretty good today, but I have heard better things about fishing in town. And beware!!! The guy in the first trailor downstream from the Bonnybrook lot threatened to unleash his pitbull on my buddy and I today. We did not even walk through his yard, just set up on the bank to fish that little run like I have for the last 7 years without a problem. Oh well, I guess I will just skip that water from now on.

Great meeting you as well. It was nice talking to you and I thought it was pretty amazing that we had both fished with that same lacrosse 2wt without knowing each other. That is one of my go to Brookie rods out in Garrett Co. Glad to hear you had a good day.

I walk on that property all the time. He's even been out with his dog and never said anything. Maybe he's fed up now. Was he pretty serious?

Maurice and I talked to him on Monday and he was mainly concerned with anglers not parking on the paved road that leads down to the gated quarry bridge. When I told him I have fished through that property for thirty years and would it be okay if we continued to fish it he hummed and hawed a bit and mentioned his dog. For now, it might be best to stay on the trailside of the creek and park up at the pull off at the curve in Bonnybrook Rd.

Yeah, he was more passive aggressive than anything. We were set up low to the stream watching that trailside run for risers in our waders with our rods, and he asked what we were doing. I said fishing and he indicated that he was worried and almost let the pit bull out. I did not understand if he was worried about us, or if he was worried that he almost let the dog out, while we were there. I could tell he wasn't happy we were there, but it wasn't super adversarial either.

Sounds like you had a productive day! I was only able to spend about 20-25min on my way home from Big Spring to explore the Letort. I Parked at the CU lot just north of the bridge and walked the banks north. Saw a lot of smaller fish in the deeper holes but no hatch/risers. I'm looking forward to going back to explore more. Is it worthwhile parking at Letort park and fishing upstream?

yeah, I also had a chat with the fella with the dog last summer....first he hollered at me pretty seriously and later in the evening he apologized for being so aggressive when I saw him again. He's got two dogs, the pit bull can be a bit territorial. He explained that the dog won't come into the water, so if he's out and you're there, just step down into the creek and you should be fine. He mostly seems to get frustrated with folks spooking and riling up the dog, best to stay right on the very edge of the creek or in it and don't cut the corner of his property to get to/from your car.

Nice to hear that the stream's been fishing well, I've yet to get out this year...

Cody and I got chased from the parking area right at the quarry. someone from the quarry said it's not okay to park there anymore because he's having trouble with people breaking in.

Well, just as an FYI, we (CVTU) are currently working on a plan to clean/tidy up our little pull off there on the corner of Bonnybrook Rd. I don't know that we're going to expand it per se, but we're hoping that the work will make for a more organized parking area which should yield an additional parking spot or two.

With all of this add'l traffic that is going to the LeTort these days I would think a parking garage might be the answer at these pulloffs. It is no wonder these property owners are getting annoyed . . .

nah, this is just the annual pattern...it's March, it's early season, as soon as the 'season' really heats up/opens up and spring runoff clears out the traffic will slow down, always has.

And no worries about Big Spring, PFBC owns all the special regs property and then some.

I think you have to respect a landowner's right to privacy when you fish along streams with houses nearby.

I'm lucky enough to have a business that allows me to park close to that area. As far as I was told, you can park at the middle school on weekends. Best bet is to just park at the park and walk on up.

Out of my 15 trips or so this winter here, I have noticed no more traffic than other winters.
I know I can't wait for the season to fish other waters, won't be long now.

Yep - it's typical. Folks have got cabin fever and are eager to get out to do some fishin but with trout season closed and most creeks frozen or blown....the CV limestoners get hammered. Happens every year at this time.

Yep, most people will fish there for a hour or two, get their butts kicked and never return. When the Letort is mentioned, most times the sentence starts with, "I fished the Letort once..."

I fished Letort once, got my butt kicked and could not wait to get back and redeem myself. It took several more trips before I did.
