Letort Spring Run, 11/22/2007

I went out to the Letort yesteday from 1030-1pm. Weather was gorgeous but the sun was a killer early on. If you fish the Letort, you already know you shouldn't fish it on bright, sunny days. I started out on the lower reaches of the stream and only picked up two small browns. No matter how careful my approach, the fish saw me and scattered every time. The water was definitely low and difficult to fish. There would be a crapload of cress surrounding a very tight window of open water. It was really frustrating trying to pinpoint a cast and drop the fly in a hole before the current swept the fly into the cress-such is the Letort...The two that I did catch were on my side of the stream, partially submerged under the cress. I saw both of them rise-to what I do not know. I put the smallest thing I had in my box on-a #20 Griffith's Gnat and they took it with gusto. I used to be into the #28 midges and 8x tippet, but those days are over lol. I was going to pack it in for the day, but a front came through and it suddenly got cloudy out so I decided to try a different spot and drum up some more business. I moved up to Letort park- no one was there walking their dogs on account of the holiday, and this proved to be a good choice. Started out at the Pomfret bridge just watching...Saw a few sporadic rises. I threw a few casts over them and had one look but that was about it. The water is pretty deep in places so I figured I would put on a beadhead yellow eztaz bugger. I caught three nice browns ~12" and had one savage strike in which the fish tore the fly off of 4x...Oh well. In about two weeks, I'm going to have plenty of time to catch him and some others that I have earmarked in the stream. Hope everyone had a good holiday...

Just wondering, do you drive a yellow truck? I passed one parked along the Letort on my way to the YB that morning.

I'm a bit confused here. Are the lower sections of the Letort open at this time of year? I thought only the upper reaches (Heritage area) were open year round.

If a stream is on the Class A list, you can fish it year round. The Letort is such a stream as designated by its Class A status outside of the special reg area.

Biggie-
If you were on Harmony Hall Rd., then you passed right by us. I took my brother-in-law fishing who is from the darkside (likes panther martins). I gave him the open meadow area while I trekked a few blocks up toward the new development and fished up to Post Rd. Next time you pass by-and you can spot me, stop and introduce yourself. I've met a few people from this site and they were all pretty cool. If you need more information on the Letort, I would be glad to help. I think we need to put you on to more challenging fish than the one's in YB...🙂
