Letort - FFO, Cumberland County, 3/22/10

Had a couple hours this afternoon and hit the Letort for the first time.

Lots of fish, only one made it to the net courtesy of a 16 BHPT nymph.

Cool place to fish except for all the noise at the plant.
Saw some big boys lurking near the bridges and deeper weed blankets. I'll definitely be back.

When I was leaving, there was a hatch going on. I have no idea what they were, but they were tiny. Fish were rising pretty steady. Killed me that I had to go.

My first brown trout on the fly rod. Wild?

Almost certainly wild.

It's got typical letort spotting. Sparse, large spots. Also notice the blue spot behind the eye. Factor that in with the fact that you caught it in a (for the most part) unstocked wild trout stream, and you have your answer.

I didn't see any stocking listed for the Letort. Thanks for the clarification.

That would be my first wild trout then. Took a lot of casts, but I figure there will be a lot more in the not so distant future.

yup, that's a wild letort for sure, red dots on the adipose fin and sparse spots. It could be from Falling Springs 😉- Greaaat JOB on the catch be very proud of yourself because it's a real trophy!!!! Anytime l get even touch a letort brown, l feel victorious. Thank you for your post bud!

Haha. Paul, I know what you mean. I have put myself in the doghouse many times because the stripers went off just as I was getting ready to head back to the ramp.

The difference for me this time was that I didn't think I had the right fly for the job. Otherwise, I would have stayed til dark.

Any guess as to what was hatching?

I'd have thrown SOMETHING at them. They were actively feeding. Half the battle is won.

What tom says is true in my Letort experience-- way better chance of catching fish when they tell you where they are and what they are interested in eating. I would have tried any small dry fly.
