With 70% chance rain in the forecast, I still made the trip out to Cumberland Cty to fish the Letort, on the way stopping at Falling Springs, and Big S. Upon arrival at FS I noticed the water levels were way lower than normal. I could see that the water line was over 1/2ft below average, but proceeded and fished terrestrials to a couple risers sipping near the banks. Just downstream, I witnessed a few unusually early Tricos hovering above a small riffle. After doing more observing than fishing, I headed to Big S where I got into some good action nymphing while also being the only one on the water. Midges and micro caddis were bringing up trout here and there but i continued to nymph saving the dry action for the sulphurs.
LeTort Spring Run
Time:6:00-9:00pm
Hatches Observed: Sulphurs, Midges
Water Temp @ 7:00pm: 64-65F (lower end)
After a much needed rain, which lasted for only about 30 minutes I set up for some dry fly action. The Letort is known for its stable flows, but like falling springs, it was lower than usual. There's one very deep pool in the area I fished, and I've never been able to see the bottom of it, until today. Weed growth is insane right now, many parts of the stream were very narrow making presentation even more difficult. Around 8:15 I saw the first sulphur, although the hatch was sparse, there were plenty of risers ending a great day in CV.
