Letort, Cumberland, 12/10/2007

Fished the Letort today from 930-3pm. Started out fishing the park off of W. North St. I walked to the southern edge of the park and worked my way back up to the bridge. Water is deep here but full of silt. I saw very few fish and only caught one which was an obvious stocker rainbow from the trout derby held on the stream some months past. I crossed the street and fished all the way up to the beginning of the project area. I tagged three nice browns-the biggest being 15" whose coloration was awesome. I also had several browns to 20" buzz my yellow eztaz beadhead bugger. They would bolt toward the fly as I stripped it across the silt bottom, do a few head turns toward the fly and then streak off with their partner for parts unknown-leaving a wake behind. Finally, I wound up fishing the meadow off of Harmony Hall all the way to the CAWC. I picked up another nine fish through here-the biggest about 12" and most in the 8-9" range. These guys were caught using a BH PT #16 and Flashbach Scud #16 under an indicator. The weather was not the best, but it was still a relaxing experience. I got through my final exams and enjoyed some much needed stress relief. From what I could tell, it looks like the browns in the stream are doing real well. I always thought that browns spawned earlier-like Nov. but there were alot of redds and fish paired up which should bode well for next year's crop. Wed. I'm going out again to explore some different water on the stream as well as possibly taking some photos if my new camera arrives in time.

Nice report and a heck of a day on the Letort! I just started working in Carlisle within 1/4 mile of where you were in this report and I can't wait until I get some time to go over to the Letort after work. I've only fished the stream maybe a dozen times ever and besides the sulphur hatches I've always struggled to catch more than 1 per trip on average.

If you work 1/4 mi. away, you can't beat that for after work! It will probably take a few outings to learn the water, but the fish are much more forgiving out of the project area. I fished the Heritage Area long enough to catch a few just to say that I had "been there and done that." After that, I concentrated my efforts on exploring more of the stream. If you put the time in, you will be aptly rewarded-believe me. The sections I have disclosed in my reports, fish well all year round though summer is when the stream is at its best. If you need any advice or info. before you head out, just hit me up.

Yeah with the exception of two outings (and one of those was my second year ever fly fishing) I've only ever fished the Heritage Area and man those fish are tough. I thought it would be close to how Falling Springs fishes but man I was wrong those fish are tough except during the sulphurs they CAN be fooled a little bit easier is fished right. The only downstream success I've had on the Letort is down closer to the connie. I like fishing faster water that breaks a decent amount and I have yet to really find a stretch I really like on the Letort. However with it so close I'm sure I'll learn it pretty fast this spring/summer.
