I didnt even bother looking at his equipment. That reel looks like it might be a multiplier.
Maski definately has the mojo going on. ESPECIALLY to take a fish like that from the Letort. I dont know if he quite understands of how common it is to see fish like that in there, yet how uncommon it is to get one to hand.
It makes one wonder about his home streams.

Ha, 5x leader, I'm gonna start donating all my 6x and above after reading that. And the Flourocarbon too. I've used flouro for the last year or so and all I can say is I've come to the conclusion that flouro breaks easier and cuts through itself at the knot. It also kinks and casts like crap. I've broken off just about every trout that looked to be 18 inches or bigger on 6x flouro. Very disapointing for me in the big fish department. On regular mono I've landed plenty of large trout. Not only that but if I get my fly stuck in a tree, breaking 5x mono can be a pain while one good tug on the flouro and it snaps. Just an observation. Maybe it's just me, and I might be doing something wrong, but it's a personal thing. I'm going back to 4 bucks a spool.
If Maski can land nice browns in the clearest gin like waters of the Letort, and Big Spring with 5x, I don't see where anybody would need 8x on any stream anywhere if the presention is right.

You make a great point. I have wasted some bucks on tiny flouro leaders and I've come to the same conclusion.
From now on, I'll only use $1.95 Fairplay Wal-Mart leaders. 7.5' mono without a loop at the end.
5X and 4X only from now on. For warmwater I'll still use a 2X from Wal-Mart.
And all the money I spent on a Orvis Superfine 1wt........ ?

I agree with Dave: it is rarely very useful to use very small lines, even on crystal-clear waters.
I use small fluorocarbon leaders only for sight fishing for grayling in France with H20 or above. The question is more about having a correct presentation of the fly than having an invisible line. The other circumstance where I use small lines is for dry fly fishing on very picky fishes: they can see the line on the surface if it is too big.
In other cases I think a small line is the best solution to loose a fish during the fight or to exhaust him so much that he risks dying after the catch.
But in the end the right line is the one you are confident in...

I think Maski is doing so well because he uses "French Flies." Which seem to work much better than our "Freedom Flies."

Seriously, your catches on those streams are very impressive and I hope you had a lot of fun there. I'd love to see your techniques, and I'm sure many other people would also.
If you have time, try to get up to fish the limestone streams in central PA, such as Spring Creek, Fishing Creek, and the Little Juniata River. And Penns Creek too if the weather doesn't get too warm.

Maski, is part of your secret that you sight fish? It sounds like you didn't fish blindly to them...
That's my downfall, I just don't have the discipline (or the eyesight anymore) to not flail away at fishy looking spots if I don't spot a specific fish.
