I wanted to do some exploring and fished the gorge above Rockport. I have eyed a certain section of this area from the bike trail that parallels the river and since I got rained out archery this morning thought I would give this section a go. 1st time fishing it
The river is way down and water temp was 60. My plan was to nymph upstream and "zonk" it back down to where I started. (Zonkers)
FLy activity was pretty sparce though a few real small Iso's where flying around, #18's, as well as a brown cadddis the same size. There were caddis cases all over exposed rocks. Surprisingly no BWO's which I was expecting due to overcast and recent rains.
Initially started with 2 fly rig with a caddis larva on the point and a peacock nymph (similar to a muskrat nymph) above. Fished a good hour before moving a fish. A "cute" rainbow about 10 inches thought the peacock would make a nice snack. Caught 3 more in the next 10 minutes all about the same size perhaps an inch or so bigger. 2 brookies and another rainbow. Then NADA for the next hour.
WHen I reached the end of the section I wanted to fish ( the tail of a large slow pool, switched over to a yellow zonker and began working my way back down on the other side of the stream.
About 15 minutes in, I lost my footing (its the Lehigh it happens) and broke my rod tip. OUTTING OVER.
Just checked the net to see who repairs Sage Rods and am on my way there now. Maybe pick up some tying mat'ls . Looks like I will be concentraing on Archery this fall.
