Fished the Lehigh below bridge at Tannery on Friday the 30th.
Was on the stream by 4:30 pm and there were fish rising at a decent rate nothing spectacular. March Browns were hatching at a decent clip so I tied on a #12 and failed to attract any takers. I also saw what appeared to be some Slate Drakes hatching so I switched to a #14 Slate and caught 5 fish in about 90 minutes. Two brook trout and 3 browns all nice healthy fish the biggest brown was about 16". Things quieted down so I hiked back up to the bridge and around 7:30 a hatch started a a pretty nice feeding frenzy. There were some smallish sulphurs coming off but the fish weren't interested in the dries or the sulphur emergers that I tried. They were hitting the bugs a few inches below the surface. Lot's of sulphurs on top drifting by but nothing eating them. For some reason I tied on a "hawger" that's what the fellow at the little lehugh fly shop calls them. I caught two more browns on that. Cast it upstream and then sort of dragged it back across the top of the water. If I could have matched the sub-surface bug I would have cleaned up. The river is at a nice level and the temperature still in low 60's.
