Air temp in high 40's, mist, wind, overcast and some rain. Water was fairly low, clear and in the upper 50's. Water levels rose during the day (almost doubling).
Float fished from Bowmanstown to Walnutport. Started out between 11:30 - 12 noon. Floated trying several streamer patterns with no luck. Nymphed from boat and on foot. Nymphing also came up empty. Wearing brand new felts in Lehigh = no traction and was like trying to wade in bowling shoes. I forgot how much wading in that river sucks. Wow.
We saw 2 river otters, herons, ducks and a hawk or two. As we entered a pool, we were engulfed by swallows. Flocks of 50-75 birds were above us and below. Never saw anything like it. I said the birds were eating bugs hand over fist and my fishing partner said 'no bugs on the water'. Within 10 minutes, blanket of tiny olives (#22-#24). Great, just what I wanted to see. Between the wind gusts, we saw a few fish sipping and did manage to cach them.
This was only my second floatand it was in October where the other float was in May. Based on the May float, would have said there were very few fish in this river. This float (worse conditions / slower time of year) did actually prove the river does hold some fish. Cold / damp day but enjoyable. Wading here made crossing the Dauphin narrows look like a stroll across a parking lot.
