Laurel Hill DHALO, Somerset County, 5/25/2008
Got on stream at the bottom end of the DHALO section in Laurel Hill State park at about 7:30 PM.
There was a variety of insect activity including small tan caddis of about a size 16 or 18; tiny cream midges, an occasional larger mayfly (I never got a close look); and I saw one enormous orange-bodied stonefly - I'd say a size 10 or 12 2x-long.
The water was a very fishable level.
I didn't see many rising fish where I was. Just an occasional fish here and there.
I tied on a size 8, yellow and brown woven-bodied stonefly nymph and had immediate success.
The first fish I caught took it on the dead-drift. However all the remaining fish took the stonefly nymph on the swing. I discovered this accidentally at the end of a drift - so I began to swing the nymph across current on purpose and it produced that way. Who'd figure.
