Laurel Hill DHALO, Somerset Co., 3/10/2010

My first time back onto this stream in over 10 years. Fished it as a teenager and am now finally back into the sport. I did not catch or see a single fish. I had the place to myself. There were 2 other vehicles parked when I left but I did not see any other folks along the stream. I did more walking and looking than fishing. Walked from the lower bridge of DHALO up to where the slow water is near boyscout camp hoping to see some midge action but nothing that I saw. I threw an assortment of nymphs and buggers around for several hours. Still alot of snow. It is a workout to walk in this stuff. Was meltong quite a bit throughout the day. I'd imagine things will be high and roaring over the next week.

I feel as though I could not catch a trout on a nymph if my life depended on it! haha


It was scheduled on the Fish Comm site to be stocked 3.6 but I'm wondering if it was.

Thanks for the update.. Alby posted that we were there on Sunday and experienced the same. We do not believe it was stocked either. There was, in the snow, what he believed to be one bucket mark and only one set of foot prints down to the creek in the 2+ feet of snow. The few that Alby caught while I explored up stream looked like holdovers according to him. He caught them all by fishing just under the edge of the ice shelf. I am surprised the level wasn't up more by now. Other than no fish the conditions were all but perfect on Sunday.

i talked to a guy the day alby and i were out saturday there were 2 guys at the section 5 dhalo down in humbert i parked as the road back to gl man bridge was impassable they had caught 4 and i noticed a few in the water but nothign was biting i asked they told me they only put 4 buckets in i guess it was a pain to just carry all those buckets back there so i went up stream i managed one as dark drew near it got really cold in the shadow of the mountain also i think the one guy was snagging them he was setting the hook with his spinner harder than bill dance does so i left

No indication on the state stocking page if this will be rescheduled.

Pharmacist, when you got to the slow water by the Boy Scout Camp was the road open/passable along the stream? Normally the truck comes down to there to stock.

Alby, that road was not opened as of Wednesday. It was gated right after Jimtown road and not plowed. There were snowmobile tracks on the road and a few sets of footprints along the creek. Safe to say no stocking truck made it to that area.

I haven't been to laurel hill creek in many years. I am planning on going there finally on Saturday 4/3/10. Can anyone help me with driving directions to the Delayed harvest section from Seven Springs???

IF not - Once I get into the park, how to I get to the DH section? Once my car is parked, is the DH area upstream from there? how far?



Any additional info/tips would be great!!!!

GVollmer,

There should be parking by the bridge above the lake. The DHALO area begins at the bridge and goes upstream 2.2 miles.

Went on Saturday, stream was in good shape. The same as I remembered it. had a decent morning, caught 4 rainbows, mostly in the deeper holes. Really enjoyed it, must go back there more often. Started to get a little crowded as the day went on. Saw many Black Stones and some real small BWO. Caught all 4 fish on 18 copper john.

Thanks for the report. My group had similar success Friday as I posted in another thread. The stonefly nymph imitation was the key, and a copper john does that very well.
