Laurel Hill DHALO @ Humbert and Yough @ Confluence, Somerset Co. 03/17/2012

Got to fish with JackM for a few hours this afternoon/evening. There were little black stones coming off on both streams, but not a lot of fish rising. I caught my first fish on my new 10 ft 4 wt Allen Myth rod, a fat 15 inch Yough brown that took a purple and white bugger. The 10 foot rod chucks streamers very well! I also picked up 3 rainbows on Laurel Hill on the green weenie. Nice to get out on the water, and nice to get out with Jack again.

Awesome fish and sounded like a good day. Can't wait to hit these sections of Laurel Hill through the spring. Will probably be on a DHALO in that area on the first day.

I caught one trout, on a dry, that was rising. That was it, but it was as enjoyable as catching 3 on a nymph. 😎

What's the best method of fishing when drys rise. Do you match the fish?

No need. I already did, I guess.

Back to fishing. I agree, I too love to catch fish on a dry, but admittedly, I usually fish nymphs unless or until I see some rising fish.

Most times you CAN catch at least a few fish on dries. The only time I find fishing dries is futile, is when there is a hatch on the water and no fish are rising anywhere. If the actual bugs are not enough to bring the fish up, I highly doubt any fly I float over them will elicit a strike.

I stalked this riser, which was one of few and far between at that time, and insisted he eat a dry. He did, and it was my first trout of 2012. Almost like a picture-perfect metaphor for my prejudicial preference for rising trout caught on the suface.

I always prefer to use periods. For emphasis. With succinct statements. Like sharp hits.

You should see his flies. They're great ties, and he has a million of every kind. (well at least it seemed that way)
