Laurel Hill Creek, Somerset County, 05/28/2011

Fished Laurel Hill Creek a couple of miles or so downstream from the Whipkey Dam area from 8:30am until around 1pm. Water was on the high side and off color but still had a pretty good day.

My brother-in-law pick up about twenty mostly rainbows with one small mouth thrown in. Most were picked up on size 14 & 12 beadhead pheasant tails. His first catch of the day was a nice size golden trout. Later he topped that with a hefty maybe twenty-inch rainbow.

I picked up a few small rainbows on a pheasant tail and missed a few others. Added a cream color, beadhead caddis on a droper and picked up a couple of on that. When thing slowed down I changed to the L.L. Bean Thin Mint streamer and immediately picked up five nice size raindows and one small, small mouth.

Most of our fish were caught in the deeper pools but I did pick up a few in the smaller pocket water.

All in all a great day on a beautiful stretch of stream with not another person in sight.

Were you down by the "swinging bridge"?

Not sure where the the swinging bridge area is but we fish down over the hill off of May Road area. Usually go upstream from there but downstream has many nice pools also but seems to get more pressure.

The green circle on the map photo is the area we fish. I might be more like 2.5 miles below Whipkey dam.

I think the swinging bridge is on the Loyalhanna in the DH section.

The "swinging bridge" was down from Faidley Road where
the blue line with blue dot heads down to Laurel Hill. They
took it down a number of years ago when a hunting club
leased the land on the other side of Laurel Hill. We always
came in from the dump on the upper part of your map.
Did you walk in from Faidley Road through the game lands?
It looks like you were fishing around where Sandy Run flows
into Laurel Hill. You can walk in where that blue line (small creek)
flows to LH. About a ten minute walk. Have fished that area
for over fifty years. Also Sandy Run has some good native brook
trout fishing. Take your camera with you.

Pulled out my State Game Lands 111 map to see where you were fishing. Your up just a bit from Humbert. That is a ways down from Whipkey and Sandy Run. Closer to Cranberry Glade Run. Nice area
down there and not too much pressure. Walked up from Humbert and
fished it a few times. Got caught in a massive storm once down there.
Was in between the split in the creek on that island. Made it back across the creek just in time.

No didn't walk in from Faidley. In the lower lef corner of the map I added a couple of red lines which show where I walk in from May Rd.

The area where Cranberry Glade Run comes in is pretty good also. That's a little below, maybe about a mile (stream wise) where we usually fish. If you go upstream from there you'll hit where Sandy run flows in. We're usually start about another 1/2 mile upstream from there and work upstream until we get to the top of the area in the green circle.
