Lancaster Pa locations

I just arrived in Lancaster for meetings on Thursday and Friday and my Thursday meeting cancelled so I have a free day and my fishing gear is in the car. Figured I’d make the best of my time here.

Can anyone point me towards water within an hours drive that is worthwhile of fishing this time of year? I haven’t fished much of this area at all previously.

SMB is likely your best bet (Susky, Conestoga, etc). If you wanted to go for trout you could look at some nearby tribs to west, but I am unsure of the water temp/flow in that area.

Dear JSky,

I'd also suggest the Conestoga River for bass and panfish. There is a large park off of Rte. 222, aka S. Queen St, and Chesapeake St. just outside of downtown Lancaster. There are many places where it is easy to access the river in the park.

Hopefully some York County board members can chime in about possibly heading west on Rte 30 to York County. Most of the rain the past few days fell down along the counties bordering MD. They might have a bit more trout water in Muddy Creek or Codorus Creek.

For Trout I prob would look north to Clarks Creek, or west to Muddy/Codorus. Not sure on the temps for Muddy but Clarks & Codorus are tailwaters. Clarks is well documented on PAFF for issues with deadfall and difficult fishing, though I have not fished there in several years and cannot attest to it.

Donegal might be worth a look, dependent on temps.

If you are willing to go a little bit over an hour from Lancaster you can look at some of the spring influenced creeks in the Cumberland Valley to the west.

Slim pickings in the immediate Lancaster area. Waters are relatively low last I saw and warming. Codorus is worth a look. Tulpehocken in reading is likely warm by now. Big spring creek in Newville (1hr from Lancaster) is certainly cool enough.

You may be limited to Cumberland valley streams ~1hr+ from lancaster. Certainly, there are some Susquehanna tribs that are chilly, but I’d wager that they’re low and slow.
