Hit Codorus for a couple hours this afternoon while on my travels.
WEATHER: Partly cloudy shifting to cloudy; very warm with temps in the 80s. Light breeze.
HATCHES/FORAGE: Nothing of note. Did not see gizzard shad.
WATER: Lake is still a couple feet below pool level making access easy along the shoreline (Marburg is shale gravel along most of its shoreline). Water temp was 58 degress F. at shoreline. No significant emergent vegetation yet. Light boating activity.
Was on the hunt for bluegills using my usual bushy dry fly with a nymph dropper. Fishing was spotty with no fish at some of the usual spots where I expect to find them. With the low water, many of the blow-downs and willow bushes that I like to target in springtime for panfish were high and dry. Did find some fish in a couple spots as well as a few LM bass. Hits were not aggressive but I saw plenty of backs...but with the usual poor hook-up ratio on the dries. There was less interest in the nymph than I usually expect. Several fish came to hand in the size range I like to see this time of year, over 7 inches with a couple larger.
All things considered, I think it may still be a bit early yet for the springtime bluegill bite, at least on deeper, colder reservoirs like Marburg. Warmer water temps over the next month should turn things on.
