Started out on Honey, but it was low.

Decided to move to Yeagertown on Kish.

Water level was perfect and temps in the low 60's. Air temp was around 80.

A small amount of mayflies were hatching, I believe them to be BWO's, but they were dark.

Flies that worked: caddis larva, and Bead Head Flash Back PT.

I've always considered Honey to be one of the toughest streams I fish. So many shallow, expansive flats! Are there trout in those areas? I know the stream is class 'A' but fish are certainly hard to come by (at least for me).

I do like Kish though. That whole area seems underrated to me. I've found that Kish, Tea, Honey and Treaster make for a great trip (tiny, small, medium and large water all in one place!). In fact, thanks to your post, I'm suddenly feeling the urge to pay a visit!
 
When I first moved here I hated Honey; for many of the reasons you stated. I found it hard to believe it was class A.

Now (3 years later) it is my favorite stream in Mifflin. A lot of fished and some great hatches.

I have caughten fish approaching 20" out of there too.

However, I love to cover a lot of water in a short time span, so Honey suits my fishing personality.
 
just got back from honey.... few small ones and one about 14 inches that had beautiful colors....couldnt get a pic.....shook the hook at shore.....used a size 16 adams, its about the only fly i use there.....

i do have monster days there, 20+ fish some days.... but there are other days i'm there and i could swear there are no trout in the entire stream. It's a puzzler for sure, sometimes

I actually originally wrote "seen", but decided that it wasn't the word to correctly describe my experiences. I guess the originaly word wasn't completely deleted. Sorry I didn't proof read. I just wish I had all of the time in the world to correct others though. It was a mistake, ever make one?

Now if you would like to add something productive to my thread/stream report of Honey Creek, feel free.
 
yes, thanks for posting. Your post has invigorated me as well to give that area a shot. Hopefully I can get on some of those small limestoners and really rip some lips. Thanks again. SS
 
hopefully the other 254 people that read this report don't get the same idea, but oh well - the more the merrier right?

Out of all the people that read this thread, half of the people will continue to pass up honey and continue to penns and spring....the other half may give honey a shot.........and.....well......probably 3/4 of them will hate the stream.....so whoever is left......i'd be happy to fish with them......on second thought, i do have a pretty good time talking to myself and the cows
 
I fish Honey creek several times a year heading to my camp near State College. There are several places I like to fish several miles up the road from Reedsville. This spring, I caight a rainbow at least two miles from the mouth of the Kish. First one I've ever caught in Honey.

Did this fish migrate up from the Kish?

Okay, okay Matt, I apologize. I was really enjoying this thread as I am always looking for good streams to fish other than the obvious ones. The word just jumped out. Sorry again. While I may or may not have your attention, I live about three hours from your area. Would you consider them "destination" streams? Would it be worth the trip? The diversity sounds particularly interesting. And, by the way, I've made many mistakes.....especially when fishing.

I wouldn't come here to fish one stream, but rather them all. Spend a couple hours on each. After all, they are literally 30 seconds apart.

I to have caught a few bows a couple miles up. I believe they swam up from the Kish, but someone could have transported them there too (probably from the Kish). I would like to think that some of the fingerling bows that they stuck in years ago would have made it and matured by now, but the bows I caught looked like fresh stockies.

Side note: The last few weeks I have caught a few bows that were definately fingerling that have grown. However, they appear to be just one year class older that the fresh fingerlings. In 3 years of fishing the Kish, this is the first time I have ever caught the hold-over fingerlings. BTW, all of the ones caught this year were nowhere near the stocking location.
 
this was the first year i caught bows in honey, look to be maturing fingerlings....however one day i was surprised when i caught a large brook trout on honey not far from where it runs into kish....perhaps it came upstream from kish?? also caught some browns and rainbows on the same day....wasnt expecting the triple crown.....esp. on honey creek!....kern, do u catch any brookies in kish, do they stock them?? I have lived in mifflin county my entire life and have only fished kish a handful of times.
 
I've never caught a brookie on kish. Could be a miss-stocked fish. Like a brookie jumped into the browns' raceway. Or it could have "relocated" from a smaller mountain stream.

The rainbow that I caught in April was at around 15 inches. Do you think this was a fingerling stock?

they don't stock any fish in honey....at 15 inches i would imagine it was a stocked fish running up from kish, not a fingerling.....i dont think they have been stocking fingerlings in kish for that long either?? but i could be totally wrong about that
 
I believe this is year 5 for fingerling bows in the kish.
