Was up for the Spring work trip at camp the second half of this past week. Streams are full and charging hard. Things definitely look good from a water standpoint. Overall for the 4 days I was up weather wasn't the best and we didn't fish much, but the second half of Wednesday turned out to be very nice. Ended up on the FFO on Kettle for about 2 hours in the afternoon:
Time Fished: 2:45 PM to 4:30 PM
Weather: Mostly Clear/Sunny, Air Temp low 60's.
Water: Relatively high (525 CFS at Cross Fork), Deep green in the deeper spots, just a shade short of clear in the shallows. Temp: 50F.
Bugs: Saw three different bugs coming off. I'm no scientific expert, especially when it comes to early season bugs, but there were two mayflies...One size 16ish light gray colored, and one very large...12, maybe even a 10, dark gray. The larger of the two is pictured below. Also a size 16ish tan caddis.
Bugs came off in waves, seeming to alternate with one another...Most prevalent were the caddis, followed by the little mayfly. The only rises I saw were to the little mayfly. Just enough to get you to switch out your nymph rig for a dry, then the wave would stop by the time you were retied.
Dredged up 4 standard issue 10-12" stockies from deep heavy riffles on a size 12 BH Stone. 3 Bows, 1 Brookie. A couple other guys out working the bridge run reported the same...All fish caught were down low on Stonefly imitations.
Nice to get out, and the flows up there look promising for a good Spring/early Summer. Streams could still use another couple of weeks of warmer weather to fully dial in however. It snowed, heavily at times, from when I woke up Friday until we left around 11:00. An inch or so sticking on the ridge tops.
