A fun several days with some college friends who were a little newer to fly fishing. I had a fun time getting out on the water with them. I had not been to Kettle in season for a long time. We made to Debs and did some of out own grilling and hanging by the fire pit int he evenings.
Water was clear and in the low to upper 50’s. The water was lowering during the few days from 265-235 CFS. Ideal conditions and levels.
Sunday was a cloudy and a little wet with air temps in the lower 50’s. Sporadic March Browns coming off the water. Fishing rising pretty steady during that period. Caddis were out, but not in heavy numbers. The fish were rising pretty slow and steady most the late afternoon.
Monday and Tuesday it was warmer getting to the upper 60’s and sunny. Daytime fishing was tougher. Again sporadic March Browns with a few BWO around. Of course a caddis as well. The magic didn’t happen until about 8:00 pm with a spinner fall both nights. Larger Rusty Brown Spinners in the faster and tradition water was best. A lot of fishing rising.
I missed about 40 fish on dry flies Monday and Tuesday. Many fish seemed to go after the fly, then would slow hit or just splash at the fly and turn away. I never had so many miss sets in one outing. I had a lot of long looks and refusals with my March Brown patterns.
