Show me your experimental ties that were scrapped before hitting the water - Here’s a Coffin fly that acted more like a drogue chute than a delicate spinner - leader twist and too much splat factor kept it from production and further development - let’s see your magnificent failures!

I tied a Mickey Finn on one of those Eagle Claw hat hooks once. I bet it is still around somewhere. It was never intended to be fished, though.

For flies that I created with the purpose of fishing them, it is definitely large dry flies that fail most often. I tend to cut the materials off and reuse the hook, though, so I'm not sure I have much for show and tell.

Commenting to remind myself to go look through some of my old fly boxes featuring some of my very first ties. Once I got the hang of the basics I tried making some truly deranged stuff back then. Like a fly that used cut foam and a bead chain to try and imitate a gold spinner...I hope I still have that one!

I stopped tying stuff like that a long time ago. Not worth the twist in the leader. Nearly impossible to cast.

The son who tied it was still a teenager and going through a form-over-function phase. He also tied a foam-body baby sea turtle that may never be used. He was however able to tie a good imitation of a blue damsel fly that floats and can adequately be casted with a short line (15-20'). He's caught bass, trout, and chubs with it. It may be the "weirdest" one in our family (the fly, not the son) but I don't have a photo.

#14 Sulphur Spinner:

This one casted fairly well - but was an absolute PITA to tie correctly - also, the durability of the abdomen (made from a vinyl serving glove heated on a knitting needle) had a suspect durability issue - 30 minutes of prep time with survival factor of maybe 2 fish - not worth it

A crazy idea …. I was going to name them “Flipperz” and they DO spin very well. A hollow core fitted with a Q-tip shank through the middle of a shaped balsa body with thin lexan plastic fins set at just the right angle - thread your tippet through the core and tie on your favorite streamer for a super wounded minnow action - all these things were true but given the aerodynamics of spinning props, a fly/lure of this size and weight SHOULD have performed with a 7 or 8 weight rig - the reality was at least a 9 weight to generate enough line speed to deliver this monstrosity - colors pictured are “Spitfiretiger” and “Focke-Wulff” 😂
