Juniata River, Perry County, 07/06/11

My nephew had baseball tourney in Newport the other night. The amount of dobsonflies was astounding and we were covered in mayflies. When I drive along the Susky (near Dauphin), I've his mayfly swarms between 8:40 and 9pm. I can only assume that they are the white flies. It's a little early though isn't it? I thought it was in early to mid Aug.

Once you've seen them, you won't mistake another mayfly for them.

Fishidiot, what stretch of the Mac did you fish? Hopefully it wasn't a bluebird day and you were successful. Nice report, wish there were 50 of those 17 inchers coming up to the to like they used too 🙁

I was fishing the lower J downstream from the Amity Hall access - this is near the confluence with the Susky.

I stopped briefly at a couple spots on the river today while driving home. The section at Newport was stained, apparently an algae bloom - this was not the case on the upper river around Lewistown where things were clear. At least in the near future, I'd head upriver. Levels right now are perfect for wading.

White and yellow. I use white mostly and once-in-a-while switch to yellow. And my poppers have more, longer dressing than most, which seem to be about 1/2 to 1/3 popper head. Mine are 1/4 foam head at the most. In my fishing, having more feather and hair hanging under the surface makes iffy smallies more willing.
