Hit the lower J today from about 1-5:30PM.
WEATHER: Overcast, rather dark; breezy but no precip. High probably seventysomething.
WATER: 4.2 at Newport; stained with about 2' of visibility; 73 degrees F (checked with thermometer). Fair amount of boating activity with passing jets boats throwing a wake causing some muddy conditions along banks.
INSECTS & FORAGE: A few damsels around but no feeding activity to be seen.
Considering the conditions, I had expected a good day of fishing. It should be noted that 73 degrees is cold water for this time of year when temps are more typically up in the mid 80s. Of course, this has not been a normal year. Levels bumped up and down a bit today but the J watershed seems to have dodged some of the recent deluge so this river might be an option if the Susky is junked up over the next few days.
I carefully worked the north/east bank for a length of over a mile. When water levels are high, such as today, I usually have a lot of confidence fishing the banks but this did not produce. Got a fish in the mid-teens and a couple others on a yellow over orange Clouser and another on a chartruese diver. These fish were out from the bank, roughly at the edge of overhanging tree growth. I did paddle out to mid river and work some rock ledges and boulders where I would typically expect to hit fish this time of year but had no hits there. Talked to a couple other fellas fishing spin gear from jet boats and they did poorly too.
Although the fishing was sub-par, it was really nice to get out for some river bassin this summer.
