I've been trout fishing every day for the last 3 weeks so I decided I should fish the Juniata before classic summer time weather leaves. I walked down to the river from my house at about 6:00 pm. I fished until about 7:30 pm. I caught close to 40 fish, I'd say. I mostly targeted the bank areas and the structure along the bank. I targeted some aquatic vegetation in about 2 feet of water as well. The fish I caught were a nice mx of smallmouths, fallfish, and redbreast sunnies. I was extremely happy to see the redbreasts as they are one of my favorite, if not my absolute favorite, fly rod game fish and I haven't encountered them in huge numbers this year like I usually do.
I caught all of my fish on a gurgler. The fly got attacked on nearly every cast that I made but often it was by very small fish and they didn't get hooked up. The fallfish were very active. I caught many small smallmouth that were only about 4 inches long, quite a few 10" fish, and a couple in the 15" range. I wasn't targeting big fish although, occasionally some large smallmouths do hang in the shallows along the bank. Either way, it was a great time and felt good to hit the bigger water again. The bass fishing should improve greatly as we cool things down a bit.
