Juniata River, Juniata County (Arch Rock Rd. Access) 6/30/2016

Fished from about 10 to 2:30...cfps about 800 at the Lewistown gauge.
Didn't get a water temp, but definitely in the 70's.

This was the first time getting my new 8wt. on the water and only my second time fly fishing for smallies. I had many follows and swipes from smaller fish and landed two 10 inchers. I did have one 14" or so fish on for a few seconds.

I used a shiner and a shad patters that I tied.

Nice. The Juniata is a neat Smallmouth fishery. I wish I would take more time to get up there and fish it. Were you wading?

Be careful, smallies are addictive. I caught the bug this year, and could care less about trout right now. I'll be hitting the Juniata for the first time this Sunday.

I did a mix of wading and fishing from the kayak. Oddly enough, there was another guy fly fishing from a kayak when I got there.

I hit the Grandville Access yesterday at the same time, but was using spinning gear. Can't fish consistently yesterday and would have probably done better with fly gear there than Arch Rock.

I'll take the suckers too Dave. A healthy fallfish fights just as good as a trout.

Anymore I think trout are a weak fighting fish. I've always thought a swattie 15" fall fish feels like a 20+ inch brown.

I fished the juniata River today, caught 15 or so small ones. Even the small fish put up a good fight. All caught on a Clouser minnow.

Fishing near Arch Rock Rd would have provided the opportunity to fish for smallies and wild Browns in the same day for a direct comparison.

I tried, and failed, to get a quillback today. They don't seem quite as skittish as carp.

Fished for a little just above Millerstown this afternoon. Three small bass and a fall fish. One other hook up. Bass on a chartreuse and white clouser and a root beer wooly bugger with rubber legs and an orange bead. Survived the constant onslaught of yakkers and tubers. Saw one other guy flyfishing from a toon. Didn't see him catch any. Water is very clear. Some clumps of algae to deal with occasionally.

Put my new Scadden toon in the Juniata at Muscrat Springs access on Sunday. That was me McSneek mentioned. Water was 74 at 10 am. Caught 10 bass and 2 large fall fish. Used poppers all day. All bass looked healthy. Bass were 6-14". Learning the river from a boat is like starting over.

I think I was done fishing when you went by. Olive green pontoon? Definitely fishing on top. I thought maybe you were following two young guys in kayaks who were spin fishing. You looked like you were handling the boat pretty well. I was at a reunion for a few hours and just killing some time. Man there was a lot of traffic on the river. Had to get out at one point to let a long string of tubers that were tied together go by. They would have dragged me away if I stayed in my spot. Like to get back up there and try some other stretches with more broken water and cover.

Hi guys,

If I can hi-jack the thread for a minute. I am staying in Lewistown, PA (Mifflin County) where we are staying is right along the Juanita River right off of 103.

Was wondering if it's worth bringing a fly rod for this section?

It really depends what stretch. The closer to Lewistown, the worse the fishing, but the easier wading.

Granville is right along 103 and has pretty decent fishing.

Up 103 toward McVeytiwn and Newton Hamilton is pretty good too.
