Hit a section of the Juniata River in Juniata Co. Friday evening with a buddy of mine. We were just a bit hard up for some bigger river wade fishing. The guage height at Newport was just a hair over 4.6’. This is a bit higher than I like for wading and the river was very off color but we figured nothing ventured, nothing gained. A sporadic hatch of white flies were emerging throughout the evening hours. It (mainly the wading) was challenging for sure but we did manage to catch some Rock Bass, Redbreasts, Fallfish and Smallies.
As the sun started to get low I noticed a number of very subtle riseforms along a seam of a small tributary so we surrounded them and caught quite a few Smallies (mostly small fish but several in the 12-13” range) just throwing conventional dry flies. Beautiful evening to be on the river and I’m very glad we decided to give it a shot.
