After last week's disappointing visit to the Susky in the Dauphin Narrows, I was pleased to see things looking better on the Juniata. My buddies and I floated several miles of the middle river. The water was low and very clear and since we didn't get on the water till late morning and pulled out at 5pm, we missed the best fishing time but still managed some decent smallies, mostly on spin gear. The bright, high, sun made kayaking seem like a glass bottom boat. What impressed me was the fish we saw: lots of smallies with many trophy class. I saw several fish in the 18-22" class. There is also a very healthy population of walleyes (also large) and muskies in addition to the tons of carp, quillbacks, and suckers. While I still didn't see as many fish as would have been common a decade ago, the river certainly has some beauties and ought to be worth a visit.
