Hickory Run, Carbon County, 7/8/2018

Caught 10 brookies on caddis and BWO size 16-18 flies between my buddy and me. Lost countless others and unfortunately snapped a fly rod while climbing down rocks. Overall good day despite the rod. Largest brookie was 7”.

Were you fishing Hickory Run or Mud Run? They both meet by the Park Office and I have found Mud Run to be more productive there and a little bigger water.

We fished Hickory Run. Our plan was to hit both but Hickory Run proved to be productive. How is Mud Run brookie wise? I know it’s stocked.

There seems to be some confusion.

Sand Spring Run originates at Sand Spring Lake and meets Hickory run just below the park office. It's the stream that flows behind the office.

Mud Run is nowhere near the park office. It flows under the turnpike near Rt. 534 and enters the Lehigh about a mile below where Hickory Run enters the river.

Hickory Run and Sand Spring Run are stocked ATWs above the confluence just to the ponds. Hickory Run below the confluence is not stocked.

Mud Run is stocked in the 2.5 mile section that flows through the south end of the park and is DHALO.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant to say Sand Spring. There are not many holes and most is narrow and shallow but there are some holes in Sand Spring that hold fish. I gets stocked right by the park office and I know this because I watched them stock it this spring. Fishes great for a few days but in my opinion is to narrow to stock and gets fished out pretty quick.

Now if you walk up along Shades of Death trail there is a nice dam and I have seen a few big ones hang out up there.

Sand Springs is on the same side as the office and Hickory Run is the opposite side of the road. I have better luck on Hickory Run upstream of the old church than downstream but have heard others do well downstream closer to the Lehigh.

Yeah we fished upstream of the church, never tried below.
