Found some motivation and decided to take the dog for a hike at Hickory Run State Park, also decided to carry the rod with me. Arrived at 1:15 pm and hiked Pine Hill Trail down to the Lehigh (didn't realize it was close to 4 miles). I was thinking of going to Mud Run via the railroad but thought better of it and walked up to Hickory Run. First hole I fished I hooked a very nice size trout on a #12 conehead olive wooly bugger. He took off under a fallen tree and tangled my line and was gone. I tied on a brown bugger and proceeded to miss about 5 or 6 more fish as I mosied up stream, all trout seemed to be good size for Hickory Run. Finally when I got near 534 I managed to catch 2 nice 9" brookies, I also missed at least 3 more. I was surprised by the extent of the activity. The dog and I proceeded back up 534 to the car. I think all told we walked about 7 or 8 miles. We're both hurting today.

i have been wanting to fish mud and hickory run for sometime now. you made my mind up....im heading there soon. thanks for the info....hey even though your hurting, i bet it was worth it! :-D
Some advice if you want to spend more time fishing than walking
Follow Hickory Run trail to fish Hickory Run or Mud Run as it flows into Lehigh.
To fish Mud Run in the park, go into primitive camping and hike down the Hill or Park at Hawk Falls and hike down.

thanks for the info. im going to hit it maybe friday. prettiest streams eh? maybe so but i find it hard to belive it is more pretty than slate. again thanks a lot! :-D
Mud Run is a beautiful place to fish, no doubt, but as far as wild fish, Hickory Run has a much higher population. Mud Run is stocked every spring and I believe that suppresses the wild fish population. Fishing is not as good in the winter on Mud Run as it is on Hickory Run in my experience, but the scenery can’t be beat. The hike down to Hawk falls is great as well as the water below the camping area. Look for tiny winter black stoneflies to hatch.
Similar experiences. A lot of my worst days fishing were on Mud Run (as far as catching numbers) but I've had several occasions where it is was great and fish were rising everywhere. I've also caught the two largest brook trout in my life there. Seems that when I go there I can usually tell within an hour whether I wasting my time. In that case I pack up and go to the Hickory House. The beer is cold and the burgers are pretty good.
