Asked MillerTime to join me to hopefully get him into his first wild trout on a fly rod. Met up around 11:30 and hiked up to the mouth. All of the leaves have fallen off the trees, which made fishing this stream a bit easier. It is tight and can be difficult to not get hung up, so we had that working for us. The part that wasn't working for us is that the stream was very very clear. It's also possible someone fished it right before we got there. I saw some fresh footprints. One neat thing was that we did see were a few redds at the tail end of a few pools. My first time actually recognizing them.

I realized that MillerTime was fairly new to fly fishing and hoped my "guiding" would get him into a fish or two. Well we saw very little activity on the mile or so walk upstream. MillerTime got the first fish.... a whopping 2" long chub. The skunk was off... well kind of. We walked and leap-frogged up the stream and I would try to put Millertime into the better spots in hoping he'd get his first fish. Came to a nice "S" turn and told him where to go and where to cast. He came up to the stream and instantly saw 2 or 3 fish dart around. He tried for a while, and then turned the hole over to me. Then he asked if I ever used nymphs and I said rarely, because I like the top water strikes (if you can get them). He was about to give up and I switched over to the famous Green Weenie. A few casts later I pulled up a 4-5" brownie. He was pumped that one of us got one and wanted his chance at the hole. He tied on his own green weenie and had at it. I released my fish a little bit upstream so not to spook the pool. We saw a fish come down to where he was fishing and assumed it was that one. A few casts later "fish on!!!" You can see the excitement of him catching his first wild .............................................................................................................

Chub.......

It was a monster chub, just around 6". We both had a good laugh and continued to fish.

I had some business to attend to upstream where I lost a nice fish in the spring. He was not in his last holding spot and we decided to head back. We fished our way back down and MillerTime again saw a few fish scatter as he approaced a pool. It's tough to know what's up ahead of you when you're not familiar with the stream.

MillerTime had to part ways to head out to an event, and I continued to fish my way out. Went back and forth with flies and decided to get back to that green weenie. I tied it on just on the 2nd to last hole and tossed it from the top of a rock about 8 feet down to the pool. After about 15 casts I put it a bit farther our and saw a very quick dart, and my fly was gone. I pulled up another nice 5-6" fish. He was very dark, and just beautifully colored up.

I then went to the mouth and drifted the fly from the falls from up top. A few hikers walked behind me and luckily didn't spook the pool. A few casts later as they were watching I felt a strong tug. I pulled up a very nice fish. I taped him off a little over 12". Not too many fish get to that size in that stream.

Well MillerTime still needs to get his first wild trout, so that's an excuse to try it again. It was a beautiful day out and can't wait till the next time.

sounds like a good trip guys! on these little streams if they don't want top-water, I try a hares ear or royal coachman wet fly, strip it up through every riffle you can find, you'll be surprised at where those fish can hide!! a tiny woolybugger works too, I sometimes cut part of the tail off, too many short strikes if the tail is too long.

Boy Ryan, those pictures don't do those fish justice. They are gorgeous right now. Your first fish that we didn't get a picture of was probably the prettiest looking fish I have ever seen in person. . .

Next to those little Nemo fish in the pet store. haha.

Yep those fish are pretty. The 2nd one I got (the smaller one pictured above) was very dark. Just beautiful. I'm working on getting a new camera so that the pictures do the fish justice.
