Hell's Run, Lawrence Co, 07/03/09

Well I just came back to this thread and saw all the commotion. Here is my reasoning to posting this.

A. It is a Class A stream. Anyone can look on the fish commission website and find it. Free public information is out there. Takes 2 minutes to find out info on this stream. I am not promoting an "unnammed trib" that has natural repo not on any list.


B. If you've ever fished this stream, you know it is not for the faint of heart. You park your car and walk a small path about 3/4 of a mile up and down a hill side to get to the stream.... that's if you can find the path, if not they you wade the Slippery Rock, and it gets that name for a reason. It is waterfall after waterfall, large boulders to climb over, and I fish about 2 miles of the stream, so if some poacher wants to take some fish out of here, he has better places to go.


C. The stream is just beautiful. I don't take many people there for the main reason that if you can't cast well, it's a frustrating stream to fish. I would bring 1 or 2 people there once a year, but I just don't. I have shown 1 person the stream, and promised a few others I will once they cast better. Might as well show off some great scenery in the pictures I take and let the people on this board enjoy it.

D. Which brings me to my last point. Yeah I believe that most of the people on this board are "snobbish fly guys"... who for the most part think we are above the bait slingers and enjoy the art of the sport, the nature we are surrounded by, the challenge of catching fish, and the conservation of the streams we fish. I bet that 95% of the people on this board have done more better things for the trout streams than harm... whether picking up a candy wrapper or worm container on the stream, or are involved in a TU with clean up and restoration. All in all, the people who put their time in on this board are worth sharing with.


I enjoy this stream, and visit it just a small handful of times every year. I have gotten several PM's about it and have shared info to fish it, and try to join those who ask. I would rather share this information, than have other guys, especially in my area of the state, miss out on a great experience fishing a stream like this.

All in all, I fished it before, I'll fish it again, and I'll share with those with inquiring minds about it.

As long as everyone is honest about their reasons for hiding info, like pcray, then I am cool with it.

When someone acts like they are doing the world a favor by hiding info, I really want to tell them to can it.

Just admit that someone blabbed about your honey hole, which could hurt your fishing. Suck it up, and move on.

I keep secrets. I admit that it's a crappy thing to do, but I like to catch fish with nobody around. I also admit that I used to rally against those that kept their own secrets-- but then I got a few of my own.

Honesty is the best policy.
 
I've got nothing against anyone fishing the stream, but I just don't do it in the middle of summer when the water is low and the fish are stressed. fall or spring are much better times on this creek. I just think we need to be a little discreet when mentioning some of these places. there are many other little wild trout gems around my area, I would be glad to show someone these places, I'm just not going to advertise them here, all of these waters are listed in various places, internet, books, maps, etc. PM me sometime, I'd be more than happy to show some of you guys some wonderful water! I never consider it "my" water, it's in a state park for crying out loud, belongs to all of us. I agree that most on this forum care a great deal about our waterways, that's why I like this forum in the first place, we are a very like minded bunch. I think we've beat hells run to death by now!!, oh, a walmart is nothing compared to the strip mining thats been going on right at the edge of the park for the last 20 years!!
time to head to french creek for some trophy smallmouth!! oops, did I say that out loud?? hee hee!!!
 
I don't post stream reports very often, but to the extent I do (did) I think there are a number of factors to consider. Everybody mentions how well known (or not ) the stream is already. Another is how hard a person would have to work to fish it, which includes both how rural the area is and how far/hard the hike is. Another factor, to me, is fish density/fragility. I have a stream I seldom talk about and would never post about. It holds some large browns for a stream its size, but very few of them. There is about a quarter to half mile of accessible water and in that there are maybe a half dozen holes that reliably hold any trout at all. Its probably a Class D population. One guy keeping a single limit of the larger fish per year would pretty much render it not worth fishing. (In fact, I think that happened this year - they've gone missing). A final factor I will mention, and I think this is a lot of what has people worked up here, is what I'll call the "only game in town" factor. I am not a local, but to my knowledge there are very few wild trout streams in that part of the state, and this is probably one of the closer ones to population centers in western PA and Ohio. Post this report about a stream in Potter County - even one nobody fished - and probably you would not hear a peep. I do agree with Jack, however, and I have said before, that the worst thing you can do if someone posts about your "secret" stream is to reply and worse yet start a debate like this one. Use PM if you want to tell the poster to please lay off. Just my 02.
 
I wouldn't have posted about hell run, but I respect ry's right to do so.
And since it was already discussed a good bit, I decided to put my 2 cents worth in, and gave my honest opinion of it.
 
My friend and I found the stream on the Fish Commission map; researched it ourselves. I even guessed and figured out "the best parking spot for access" on my own.

I was thinking to myself, wow. . . This is going to be great. I am going to sneak back in here and have the place to myself.

I was trying to figure out more about the stream online. . . and that is when we stumbled on to this site.

I found a post on the Hardest Creek to fish in PA and I accidentally found Hell Run in there. I PM'd Ryan and he was nice enough to point me in the right direction for fishing the creek.

I have come to find that everyone on here is a beast fly fisherman haha. I have alot to learn. There are Hundreds of people fish that creek. I had no clue.

I must have sounded like an idiot on here. I still do. my first few days on here, wow. I have learned 174646373 things on this site as I have begun to have a passion for fly fishing.


One of the most beautiful places I have fished. It should be shared.
