Weather: Around 62° both days, cloudy with an occasional shower.
Clarity: Clear on 5/21 and off color on 5/22.
Time: 2-4:30 PM (5/21) 9-11:30 AM (5/22)
Hatches: Midges, Sulphurs
I started off on 5/21 using a black woolly bugger with a heavy line setup, fishing in the waterfalls that plunged into the pools. Had a few follows in the first hour, but couldn't convince a take. Switched over to a BH Prince nymph and got a small rainbow just before heading out due to rain. On my way out, I talked to a guy that gave me a fly to use to have better luck, and told me how to fish it correctly. The sulphurs were coming off lightly and he said it was the perfect time for the fly. The next day, 5/22, I went back to fish the same stretch in the now off color water. I used the fly that the man had given me, because it was working for him the previous day. Drifted it with an indicator I'm the same pools as the previous day and ended up hooking 4 rainbows, and losing one of them all on his fly. All 3 were around 14" and the one I lost was a bit bigger. Saw 4 other fly fishermen, and one young kid with bait there. Still some nice fish left in rustic park from the rodeo. If anybody can give a name to a size 16 hook with hares ear dubbing, a tungsten beadhead, and some pheasant tail as hackle, please let me know. As far as I know it is a made up fly, but it sure does work. I feel bad fishing behind the other people and catching all the fish they tried for.
