Hammer Creek, Lancaster/Lebanon Cos., 9/23-27/13

i think you guys are being a little hard on squatch - yes it may get posted now to protect the flora and fauna, but theres still miles and miles of creek to fish and good fishing to be had.

if the Deeders wanted it off limits it would be churlish to want it otherwise.

if it does get fished out by bait fishers then its a good thing if it gets posted - as i said its never a bad thing for the fish to have a little refuge.

 
I’m still really fuzzy on what’s left to debate here. We’ve been informed by the landowner (twice now, via two different means) that fishing is not welcome on this property. Based on Squatch’s email with them, I believe them that it was an honest oversight on their part not having the signs there. Whether the signs show up or not, we clearly know the intent of the landowner at this time. If this was a nudge/nudge wink/wink type of scenario, I don’t think the Conservancy would have responded, or if so, they would have responded differently than they did. I can’t imagine them purposely undermining the intentions of the donor that donated the land. Doesn’t make sense. It’s their job to care and respect the wishes of the land donor.

Time to just fish elsewhere gang.
 
what conservancy is being talked about here? Is it The Nature Conservancy?

If so I've had direct contracual agreements with The Nature Conservancy in the past. If they say no fishing, hunting or anything they mean it. They don't want to be responsible for anyone un insurured doing anything on their property.
 
While I am not referring to this specific case (Hammer), Maurice's point is well-taken as a general commentary on what happens at times with respect to pressing landowners. I am paid (required) to do it, but sometimes it is clear that if I had just kept my mouth shut things would have been much better, at least for the locals. Some landowners are willing to allow fishing, but they don't want "fishing permitted" signs posted. They don' t mind the occasional angler who walks up the creek or the amount of pressure that they see at present, but they do fear the unknown...specifically, whatever additional pressure might be generated by signage that clearly says "fishing permitted." While I don't think the signs generate much pressure on their own (the stocking truck does if it stops there), it is occasionally hard to convince landowners of that. On other occasions, and this is pretty common, things are borderline fine until I ask. The landowner is already on the fence regarding allowing fishing and my question gives the landowner something to consider. Land becomes posted just because the question about allowing fishing was enough to tip the old apple-cart. Before someone jumps all over this, be advised that my questions have officially opened many miles of streams to fishing over the years, but the experiences above are something to consider and expect when you contact as many landowners cold-turkey as we do.
 
If the deed restricts angling in some way, it would be irresponsible for them to specifically permit it, or fail to mention the restriction. But, as noted, if they really don't care, then it is a "nod and a wink" situation. See no evil....
 
I went for a drive along the creek today - smaller than I imagined, about the size of VC. I didn't fish cos I thought it being ATW it's was closed but I saw two guys walking out as i was leaving.

I guess it's not ? We also saw that there was a ton of 'by permit only ' signs around obie road, where we saw a ton of turkeys and some deer.

 
That's what I thought but we saw two guys, one with a yellow glass rod, and I was going to call them in until we saw a black station wagon in the lot with a Manchester United sticker, and Mrs GB argued that the poor guy whoever he was had been traumatised enough this year....

Swattie, Walnut had some ice in it, but nothing like Segloch or Furnace. Any thoughts on why they would be frozen "solid" but Walnut still had some moving waters? I wonder if it has some springs.
 
When driving north on 501 across the turnpike there is a 3 degree temperature difference. Also segloch sits at the bottom of the valley between 2 "mountains". Walnut flows from the top down.

That's not funny. Okay, it kind of is, but it could be worse. We could be Fulham supporters....
 
Does Walnut travel East or West? North or South flowing streams in steep ravines tend to freeze more frequently because they see less light during these short days. Not to mention the valleys dont see significant fluctuations in surface temps.

The converse is true in summer with warmer temps.
 
There used to be signs that said "No fishing" at the Upper Hopewell Furnace Preserve. It was about 10 years ago that I last remember seeing them along the stream on the paved section of Pumping Station Rd. They either fell off or someone helped them fall. I do see bait fisherman down in that section from time to time and it would be good to get some signage replaced since there are some wild trout in that section as well. It could definitely function as a protected spawning region like some of the brookie streams in the northern part of the state that have "brook trout refuge" areas.

On the topic of signs---There are now the white PA Fish Comm.signs on upper part of Hammer that say "APPROVED TROUT WATER" On the same trees are signs that say something about needing a permit to enter the area (Signed PA Dutch Boyscouts or something like that)... There are also signs in the same stretch that say NO HUNTING and they are signed by some Hammer Creek Hunting Club (whoever they are?). Signs everywhere!
Pretty confusing... Think I prefer seeing the nice trees and NO signs like it was for YEARS.
 
Mo - All three of them generally flow north/south. Walnut has a trib that nearly doubles the flow that comes in from the west though.
 
Yes I agree, those signs are very confusing, foxtrapper. What I can tell you is, Hammer is stocked the entire way up to the red bridge at Camp Mack. It is my understanding that the fish commission isn't in the bidniz of stocking people's private property if they close it off to public fishing....
