well guys today i had the probably best day fishing that i can remember. for obvious reasons i cant state where but i landed a 13 inch wild brook trout(i thought it was 14 but after remeauserment on my rod it is 13), a 20 inch holdover brown trout, 2 wild rainbows,1 wild brownand about 20 wild brooks(under legal size).that was in the am and on a differnt stream.
i admit that i do mostly the big ugly fishing. nymphs, buggers, san juan worms,eggs........whatever. i consider myself a nympher. not by choice but because im good at it. i have a high success rate fishing those types of flies. not that i havent caught fish on drys.....just not like i do on those "nymphs." then there was today.
i went to lititz run figuring that i caught to very nice fish today and maybe i could get one of those pellet feed hogs. when i got there i learned the stream is closed from today to tuesday. the conservancy and the catch and release area are both closed! for a tourney! what next!
i havent been to county park on hammer since i was younger when it first started. i thought what the hey. any of you guys that know me ....know im a wild trout nut and almost never fish for stocked trout. i didnt even expect there to be trout left in there.
i arrived at 3:00 and geared up. i slowly worked my way upstream.....no trout in sight. suddenly upstream i saw some rises. i got up there and low and behold between 2 holes (right next to one another) there was about 30 trout. after trying to get these guys on a bugger (caught 1) these 2 baiters mover right in beside me. i turned and said, "excuse you! im fishing here" the arrogant SOB said, "thats ok your not gonna catch much anyways." well now that kinda peeved me. i ask, "you wanna put your $ were your mouth is?" he said, "sure ill take this hole and you take that one. who ever catches more fish gets 5 bucks."
i said,"its on!" (his friend was quite the whole time, probably embarassed) well i thought now i might be in trouble these browns had been refusing me pretty readily. but they kept on rising. i saw no hatch in sight and started throwing midges.
nothing. i had my CF design box with the extra insert with me full of drys, it has about 400 flies in it. so i know i had the right fly just which one? well i started guessing.
meanwhile the baiter had caught 2 browns. 2-0. he was laughing it up. then it happened...i was observing and it flew right in front of me. the finest speciman of a BWO size 16 i have ever seen. i tied one on. WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! just about every cast landed me a stocker brown trout. the baiter threw his rod down and screamed," HOW CAN ANYONE CATCH FISH LIKE THAT!" his friend said, "i dont know but i might try to learn!"
by the end of my little "tourney" the score was:
sal:23
baiter:2
he came up and went to hand me 5 dollars. i wanted to take it but figured i already handed his butt to him enough. i said, "put that away. he insisted but i said no. i told him that this is not what fishing is about. i just wanted to teach him a lesson. if he would have asked if he could fish there i would have gladly made room for them. im not a trout hog. i just dont like it when people just move right in and besides that....i had a blast!
i have never caught trout like that on dries before, it has changed my persective on flyfishing forever. i caught fish on flies while flyfishing. the way our sport was meant to be. next time i see them rising.....dry time!
oh yeah, he asked me how i know what they were eating. i told him the answer was right in front of my face :-D
