Gunpowder River, Maryland, 3/27/2010

Arived at the stream@ Fall Rd., no other vehicles observed. Greg and l rigged up and set out to do some fit'n. Within the first 10 minutes Greg yelled "fish on"! I was pleased to see him land a hard fighting 10 incher. Minutes later l hooked into a nice 14-15 inch brown. He spit the fly 5 feet from me, DARN! All fish were taken on midge pupas. We decided to take a walkabout to the sweet spot. Upon arriving to the honey hole, l noted BWO's 22-26's coming off in excellent numbers. The fish would not be rising to them until later, so we stuck with nymphing the midges. I ended up landing numerous browns and one rainbow, while Greg finished the day with 5 browns. Around noon, l noticed several browns rising to the bwo's, so l put on a 22 dry. I missed four in ten minutes and then one rised 5 feet away from me. I dapped my fly right on him and he nailed it. A beautiful 12 incher! 😀

We decided to call it quits around 1:00 and grab some grub and a few country cool downs!!!! Great day to be on the water and the fish God's smiled upon us.

Didymo alart!!!!! To those of you who may be concerned. The didymo is very bad right now. During the winter it was nothing like it is now, it's covering everything and it is quite disturbing. Hopefully, with warmer temps it will go away. I must say that l haven't seen much of a change in the amount of bugs that are visable, but with time, that will change.

Shame about the didymo.....sounds like you fellas had fun though!

It really is a shame that the didymo is so bad. But, the river is still fishing great and the fish are there. The Gun is my favorite stream in the Mid-Atlantic region. Hopefully all anglers will follow directions for cleaning/ drying off gear so other stream systems won't be cross contaminated. 🙂

I like the Gunpowder too and used to be willing to travel the 1.5 hours to get there. But since Didymo that is less compelling. I would be interested in recent pictures showing the increased level of infestation (if that's the right word)

Glad to hear you had a great day on the gun, I hit fishing creek this evening with a lot of bugs coming off the water. Looking forward to taking some of your previous advice on some of the other frederick streams here soon. Do you know what stream follows yellow springs rd up into the frederick watershed? It looks like brookie water but since you seen to know so much about this area thought I might ask. Best of luck this weekend since it looks like great weather.

That stream is called Tuscarora creek and it does have a decent population of nice brookies. There's a pull off which almost like a picnic area. I would recommend fishing that stretch. Ask permission for downstream locations, most owners will be very surprised that you're interested in fly fishing there property 😉 Have you explorered Ballenger Creek yet? How did you make out on fishing creek, was it crowded and what kind of bugs were coming off?

Tuscarora Creek huh, that makes sense since I've passed the bottom section along 15 and I read that little T has brookies as well, I will definitely try it. I haven't hit Ballenger yet, I was looking at the map and wasn't sure if I should jump in at the park or go further up. Fishing creek was crowded last night but all spin fisherman, so I hit the brookies in between them I saw some stoneflies hatching and managed 2 to hand. Thanks for the advice and inside MD scoop.
