Gunpowder river, Baltimore County, 2/7/17

Took advantage of the beautiful weather and fished the gp from 7-11:30 this morning. The flow was 40 cfs water temp was 39 degrees. When I started the air temperature was 38 but it was in the mid 50s when I was finishing. There were a decent number of midges in the air, I saw a few splashy rises but no stoneflies. I landed around a dozen fish on midges, most were 5 or 6 inches, but one that was around 14.

Very nice. In my limited experience on the Gunpowder (two years) a 14" trout is a real trophy. I stopped buying a license after two years and my biggest trout was 11".

Thanks, there are definitely alot of smaller fish in the gp.

There are, however, larger fish in the system. I know several people that have taken 20+ fish (and I've seen one when I volunteered to help with the electro-shocking survey one year.

My personal best was somewhat over 17, but I catch one or 2 of about 15 every year. (I carry a tape -- those are measured lengths, not estimates.)

They're in there -- they're just not common, and the average length is still about 8 inches (and that's still a nice fish Ryan is showing.)

Nice Ryan. I need to fish more. Busy at work and trying to get the house interior painted on the weekends before Spring hits. Been knocking off one room/weekend for the last month...I hate painting and refuse to do it during "good" weather. Could use a good fish/hike day though about now. Enjoying your recent reports...helping get me through the slump.

I should hit April 1st with 0 PTO days burned for the year though and hopefully the painting done...Gonna catch up on my fishing and then some.

There may be the occasional 15" plus trout but even though the river flows through a nice area, with very little road noise, the trout are just too small to pique enough interest in my buying any future licenses. Especially since I already but season licenses in NY, OH, and MT.

I got one around 17 in early November, I put a report with a pic up. They are definitely in there, just outnumbered.
