My oldest son (8 yrs old) did a euro nymphing lesson this evening on the Gunpowder, which is close to our home. This was his first time catching wild trout with a fly rod, so I think he had fun. I tried to stay around the next bend most of the time so he did not feel like I was watching over him. Our guide is a local Maryland guy and a great teacher (Tightlining MD).
The water was low and clear, but the temps were still good (high 50s/low 60s). We fished near Blue Mount Rd, which is near the bottom of the 7+-mile catch & release section. My son caught 4-5 wild browns and I ended up catching the same. No big ones this time, but we did not get skunked. The most important thing was that he had fun and is excited to go out again.
