Gunpowder Falls, Baltimore county Maryland, 4/29/17

Started at around 7am and fished till 1130am. Took a water temp reading when I started and it was around 55 degrees, with the flow at 98cfs. Decided to try my luck with the Dry flies and it paid off. At first didn't see any bug activity, so I started off with a cdc tan caddis size 16 and after about 15 minutes got my first hookup with a beautiful 8inch wild brown. Not long after that saw a few caddis coming off and saw some hungry trout rising for them. Ended the day with roughly 10 fish to net and missed a few more. All in all it was a good day to be out on the water even though it was a bit cloudy with a few sprinkles. Call me crazy, but one of the fish I missed was on a size 14 tan foam ant, just couldn't resist trying. Sorry tried to upload a few pictures , no luck....

"Cloudy with sprinkles" is the best fishing weather.

If you get the chance, try fishing later in the afternoon. There are sulfurs coming off in good numbers in much of the river.

When I was there Wednesday afternoon, there were still some Hendricksons left (probably gone by now), a lot of sulfurs (both species), and a fair number of caddis. I caught 38 trout between 3:30 and 7:00 -- third best day ever on the Gunpowder in terms of numbers.

Redietz, I agree with you on cloudy and sprinkles being the best fishing weather. I really wanted to make today all day on the Gunpowder, but having a girlfriend with MS only allows me to get a few hours here and there. Definitely looking forward to the sulphurs as I have heard they are coming off, guess ill have to plan a later in the day trip to the Gunpowder. As for 38 trout in one day that's totally amazing and hopefully. Thanks for the info, maybe bump into you one of these says as I plan on spending as much time as I can fly fishing the Gunpowder.

Red is wrong, there are no sulphers on the gp now. 🙂
