Time Fished: 10:00 am- 04:00 pm

Weather: Partly cloudy with a small breeze. Some periods of direct sun, but overall nice conditions. Temperatures rising into the mid 60s.

Water: 190 cfs, which is a very strong flow on the Gunpowder. Plenty of good seams to fish; however it was quite a workout moving around the river today. The water was a nice green color with very little rock snot. Water temp in the low to mid 50s.

Hatches: Midges (no see ums) size 20-32. A few blue quills in the early afternoon. No larger mayflies to speak of. I saw one or two caddis flying around (size 16) with tan mottled wings.

Results: I fished the day with my friend from college. Typical Gunpowder day based upon my experience. We took a good number of browns from the better looking runs. Fish were congregated in the slower water adjacent to the swift runs. I took several on a Hendrickson nymph, so the adults should be coming soon. We also got a few on the swing with soft hackles, as our presentation rose through the water column at the tail end of a dead drift. The fish and flies are starting to wake up, but not quite there yet on the Gunpowder. We did not catch anything over 10 inches today, but they all were remarkably beautify and spunky in the heavy water. Happy Easter to all!!!

Sounds like a typical Gunpowder day of late. The 190 is actually a bit lower than than it's been averaging for the last few months. The fish are definitely hungry, but I've been fishing it at least twice a week, and haven't seen a bug bigger than a size 32 in over a month.

The stream is always worth a visit. The fish, although small, will give lie to the the belief that browns aren't jumpers.

3Wt- we need to fish the savage sometime! We hit the Gunpowder on 4/20, saw basically the same thing. It was only my 2nd time there but let’s just say my arm was sore after the day.

Hopefully they drop the release on the lower soon!

Mushmatt,

I would take you up on that sometime. It won’t be long until the Savage is in good shape.

I would also like to explore the Gunpowder more with redietz. It is always interesting fishing unfamiliar water with someone, who regularly fishes it. It definitely provides a different perspective.

I'm hitting the Savage Sunday, come hell or high water. I will be sure to post a report.

We have had good luck the last week on the savage, we will be out tomorrow as well.

Ryan- saw your truck I believe as we where leaving. I caught a fair amount and lost a monster. Broke off 5x fluoro!
