Gunpowder Falls, Baltimore Co., Maryland 12/11/20

I really needed to get out and made a short afternoon trip to the Gunpowder. Originally the forecast called for some clouds and warmer weather.

The weather turned out to be in the low 50's and sunny. More sun than I wanted but happy to get out. The water was low and clear. Pretty Boy Reservoir is a bottom release dam so the water is cool, but the stream bottom is very dark. Very difficult to see the depth of the runs and even the fish.

The place was pretty busy with parking lots full of hikers and anglers enjoying the day. The stream was active with plenty of anglers.

I hit several ripples and runs. I got a few bums and one small dink of a brown. I very nice afternoon and walk on the trails where Lefty spent a lot time.

Always cool to spend a few hours on the Gunpowder. I’ve never had a bad experience there, just a really neat fishery, and I don’t always catch fish when I’m there. Thanks for the report, Dave.

GP is where I learned how to FF. I fish it often.

FYI that is Baltimore county not Carroll unless you were upstream of Prettyboy.

You are correct, I drove through Carroll. I should know better.

My love of the sport was developed on that stretch. I lived in Baltimore city but have since moved back to PA. I miss having the GP within a 30-40 minute drive. I loved fishing the sulphur hatches and just observing the trout and birds feasting on them. Thanks for the post and picture. It’s tough fishing but I love this place.
