Glen Park Trash

Was at the 80 bridge on the Brodhead at Glen Park opening afternoon. Trash and litter were unbelievable. It was disgusting. Not sure if it was blown off 80 over winter or trash from the homeless that call that area home. Either way it was pathetic. Tires stacked 3 high to form a wall 150ft or more long on the west side and enough concentrated trash under the east side of the bridge to fill 40 yd dumpster.

Spring Creek used to also be incredibly trashy. Same with Penns Creek. Now they're not.

An annual cleanup totally changes things.

From experience, I'd say the cause was the latter and a clean-up of the perpetrators will have a much more lasting effect...

FWIW - I used to live up the hill and I fished the "Canyon" a lot. It steadily got creepier & creepier until I decided constantly looking over my shoulder was no fun and I moved upstream.

They are mostly harmless. Only had one negative interaction with them when one guy tried to rob me, but a impromptu aiki jutsu lesson seemed effective. Felt bad afterward and gave him a few bucks to get some food.

Trash is always a bummer,I try to keep a shopping bag or two in my pack so I can collect trash where ever I fish.Theres a really nice small lake close to me that I like to take my kids too,and it always amazes me how much trash people leave behind,especially worm containers and fishing line.

I always keep a plastic Wawa bag in the back of my vest for small trash items that I might encounter, but sometimes I'll come across something too big for practical removal, so I'll usually take it away from the stream and hide it further up in the woods. Out of sight...

I hope of you who are inclined to pick up trash carry nitrile gloves or something else, especially if you are picking up garbage near a homeless encampment...

Thanks for the invite, Joe! Kidding, I have not been up there yet this year. It sounds like your boys moved down from under Main Street bridge where historically there's been a camp or upstream from behind the shite plant. Kick those guys out of one camp, and they're just going to move to another.

Maybe coyote in the gorge will raid the camps and scare them away 😉 Been seeing them very early in the mornings over the last few years, the coyote and the meth fiends.

They've both been harmless in my experience since the mid-80s, but everyone should play it safe and stay away from the Brodhead, especially if you're coming west over Rt 80 with two plates 😆

I contemplated it when crossing the DWG but opted to forgo it this time. Enough meth heads and homeless camps in my local NJ stream that I don't want to deal with it when I travel.

I don't carry nitrile gloves and that doesn't stop me from picking up trash. Why is it especially necessary to wear gloves near a homeless camp? Do they have cooties that people who live in a house (and are the main source of litter) don't?

I don't and wouldn't pick up trash ANYWHERE (except my own property) without gloves...

Ask you trash man if they do their job without gloves...

But go ahead, pick it all up without and keep you fingers crossed.

Smart man. I’ve worked in waste management all my life. Nothing gets touched without gloves. Hep B being the main thing to protect against. Gloves are no help against sharps, like used needles.

I went to throw streamers at striped bass on lake Arthur last summer,trash ,beer cans,dirty diapers, McDonald's containers, potato chip bags ,unfu$_#+ing believable, disgusting city campers IMO
