I’ve been trying to catch a late season golden for a while now, and I got it done as of yesterday, this particular fish has held over in the breeches for a couple years, I got him to take a really small pheasant tail but he spit it instantly, decided the chartreuse mop was a good idea, and he ate it.

Call it what you will, (I call them “Tracer Trout”) this is an exceptional fish - nice fins and coloration suggesting a healthy stream based diet - as for holding over, yes these fish do if given the chance. I watched one grow up in “The Ditch” some 40 years ago - a hatchery escapee some 4” long grew into a “keeper” sized (15 inches Trophy Trout regs circa 1983ish). I fished over that specimen for 18 months and finally got him to take a #16 Red Midge larva. He measured out at just under 19 inches - after a photo, I took him home and fried him up and learned a good lesson on the benefits of catch and release - even with a stream diet of 18 months, the fish still tasted like hatchery effluent - I kickstarted my conservation ethics with that meal. But your fish is fantastic and you have a great photo record of a lifetime catch! Well done Sir!

We stocked several large golden rainbows in the allegheney in coudy ....one was there i believe 3 yrs later ..so they can holdover long term sometimes when luck and conditions allow
