Sorry for the late post. Been busy but I thought I share in case others are looking for new fishing opportunities

My wife and I needed a much deserve immediate break and Maine is still a little to cold for a vacation right now, so we decided to try something new (yes, we'll be in Maine soon enough for our Maine trips).  We opted to go to the Virginia mountains for the first time.  Not knowing much about the region, we were immediately impressed with the beautiful scenery and isolation.  We rented a place on top of one of the mountains with the George Washington National Forest only about 30 feet away.  Nice long walk down the mountain leads to 2 different fishing rivers/runs for me (Black Run which is a native trout stream and Dry River).  In addition, dry river runs fairly long. so I had plenty of spots to drive to.  Local fly shop Mossy Creek provided me a great tip to fish Skidmore Fork.  I will also say that they convinced me to book a Smallmouth Bass trip the next time I am there.  Since it is only about 4 hours away, I think we will be going back again.  Some pictures below.

Fishing jumping in skidmore fork, you'll see it about the 20 second mark.  Generally, you walk, wait and watch.  I threw 2 times at him and he just miss the second one and got wise real quick.

I think she was the best looking one all week.  Wild one from the Black Run.

nice.

that time of year i wonder why Mossy Creek fly store didn't send you to Mossy Creek ? as a spring creek the fishing would have been pretty constant. tough but constant.

Love mossy creek! The guys in this Flyshop are the greatest. I haven't fished black run or skid ore yet. Glad you enjoyed your stay here in VA

Giventoflyfish,

Tell us about that cabin if you don't mind; it looks inviting. Is it a private cabin or part of a group of cabins?

Thanks,

Jerry

The family owns several cabins on the mountain. Some are more remote than others. The one we stayed in is on top of the mountain and is more secluded. You will definitely need 4x4 to get up to that cabin but the others are accessible using normal cars.

They do a fantastic job of cleaning the place and the one we stayed in had a fireplace right in the bedroom which was nice for the wife.

Where you fishing in GW National Forest and if yes, did you need a fishing license?
