Game land parking rules?

I’m not a hunter and also know zero about game lands.

What are the official (and unofficial?) rules for parking in state game lands? Aside from the designated parking areas, I’ve read that parking is generally ok on roadsides so long as the area isn’t posted and your vehicle is completely off the road. Is this accurate?

Also, when should I be sure cap my melon with laser bright dayglo orange? Is that an always thing or just during certain times of year?

" Usually" if the PGC does not want you to park alongside road, there will be "No Parking" signs. Without them, it would be pretty difficult to enforce. However, you are not allowed to drive on SGLs. Be sure you are off the road but not in any field, clearing etc. There are 3 SGLs that I hunt small game on and parking along the roadside is common. On the 4th, the "No parking" signs are obvious.

As for fluorescent orange. There is no law that says you have to wear it if you aren't hunting; however, it is very good practice. Especially during November firearms season. It is a minor inconvenience. A simple FO beanie or baseball hat is fine.

I am pretty positive you are ONLY permitted to park in designated parking areas and pull-offs.

You are NOT allowed to park on the edges of fields which I assume means on the side of the roads adjacent to those fields.

Fluorescent Orange Requirements

Whenever orange is required, it must be worn at all times while hunting.

Generally, when orange is required, hunters must wear 250 square inches of fluorescent orange that's visible from 360 degrees on the head, chest, and back. A hat and vest satisfy this requirement.

When using a blind or enclosed tree stand during firearms deer, bear, or elk seasons, a minimum of 100 square inches of fluorescent orange material must be displayed within 15 feet of the blind or stand and visible from 360 degrees.

It is unlawful to be on state game lands from November 15 through December 15 without wearing a minimum of 250 square inches of fluorescent orange, unless engaged in lawful hunting or trapping that doesn’t require the use of orange.

In other words, EVERYBODY on SGL's from November 15 through December 15 is supposed to wear orange.

I wasn’t clear. I’m not concerned about the law so much as not getting my head shot off. I have FO hats, but I prefer insectshield treated gear to control the gnats and skeeters, and I don’t have any of those in FO.

I fish on SGL’s a lot. I switch out my normal ball cap (or beanie if it’s cold out) for FO from opening of archery in September through late deer season in the following January. It’s not that big of a deal IMO, just a different color hat.

As far as parking, try to park in lots or designated pulloffs when possible. And do not under any circumstances block access to gates, whether they are marked no parking or not. That being said, from a practical perspective, as long as your vehicle is fully off the road, not blocking traffic in any way, fully within the SGL (don’t park on nearby or adjacent privately owned land), and not damaging anything where it’s parked, I find it highly unlikely you’d be hassled. (Unless there are no parking signs there. Clearly abide by and respect those.)

Edit: Don’t leave it parked overnight either. (Unless at a designated through trail lot that doubles as an SGL lot.)

For years I've carried a blaze orange ball cap, bandanna and light weight orange vest in my gear bag for those time I know there are hunters in the field when I am fishing.

I may not wear the vest at all times, but I will wear the ball cap and the bandanna around my neck. I also no longer fish SGL's November 15 through December 15.

Another thing to add, is at certain times of the year the gates might be open and there will be additional parking area's within the interior of an SGL.

You can send your FO caps and other stuff to Insect Shield and they will treat them for you.

It is a great deal and the treatment lasts a LOT longer than DYI options. I do it with my fishing shirt, pants and ball cap.
