French Creek Chester Co. 5/14/2009

Got out this morning around ten; water was clear and running well. Weather was mostly cloudy with several showers, drizzle, and then, a brisk wind that created a ton of flotsam in the creek. Not many bugs or risers, though I did see one sulphur, some caddis, and midges. Started above the fly stretch and found solitude and plenty of trout, as well. A caddis pupa fished with short twitches was the winning ticket, though my black ant dropper caught some as well. Moved to the bottom of the fly stretch, where the fish were harder to fool. I was expecting that, but still managed to bring two to hand, one a 14'' brown. Also hooked or rolled four more. Went downstream a ways, my third truck move, and caught a couple more and called it before three. There are still plenty of trout out there in the open water. I'm routing for more rain.

You got your wish for the rain but may have to wait a bit for the water to clear. There was maybe 6 inches of visibility when I checked it our in Warwick Park this morning. More rain is forecast for the weekend so it looks like it will stay well off color.

We got a nice burst last night, ended up being over an in. I watered my new apple trees yesterday, just to be certain. On the plus side, the fish get extra protection, and will be around longer. I'm fairly certain that high, muddy water, has been the main reason French is still holding as many fish, as she is. Considering the economy, it seems as a lot more people are getting more days for fishing. (me included) Maybe the Sulphurs will arrive soon with a couple mild days coming.
