You know … the type that may be created after an extra drink - not necessarily fishable or even reasonable …. but …

I wish I still had a copy or a photo of my McDonald's French Fry Fly, tied many moons ago, also of clipped/stacked deer hair...

I made one version with ketchup & one without after getting some Falling Springs trout behind McDonald's in Chambersburg to eat the real thing.

I never gave them a trial run back in C-Burg, but I did catch a duck with the non-catsup version at the Run... 😳

I don't remember what ultimately happened to them, but I'll have to dig around and see if I still have one...

Recreate it if you can’t find it and post a pic! I’d love to see that one 🍟

Back when I used to keep trout - I’d sometimes find real cig butts when doing the stomach autopsies - I never thought of matching that hatch!

The Cigarette Butt Fly goes back many, many years ago when a couple of friends & I used to talk about writhing a book titled, "Scratching the Hatch" featuring flies based on stupid stuff trout would eat.

It got as far as my tying the Cigarette Butt Fly, a French Fry Fly, a Bread Fly (white with crust & whole wheat), a Penny Fly (a real penny hot glued to a hook) and a Spit Fly but alas, we never wrote the book...

Probably because Schweibert was still alive at the time and wouldn't have laughed about it as much as we did... 😉

Speaking of "Scratching the Hatch," I once had a hilarious conversation with Bob Clouser at his shop about my stupid flies and a corn fly he worked on for similar reasons.

He told me he spent a ton of time messing with different materials so it fell through the water column at the same speed as a piece of corn which coming from him was pretty funny...

Remember too that Bob was the master of the lower Susquehanna - carp were there in numbers - carp weren’t of the same fly fishing targets as they are now - and corn was one of the choice carp baits for us old river rats - I know what he was thinking

I've seen an Utz Hatch at Boiling Springs a time or two. Bread crumb flies for the match.
We used to tie a bread fly made of memory foam from a discarded pillow - it absorbed water and became neutrally buoyant like real bread - they worked well just downstram from the footbridge at the Run - also in the old scour hole just below the lake - we called it “The Educator” - Bob Houser used to just roll his eyes from his observation point on the hill behind the Furnace - good times - photo shows a bit of an Educator protruding from the mouth of a newly educated stocker Brookie - I didn’t stoop to chumming for them myself, but always kept a fly at the ready and a sharp lookout for matching the bread hatch if needed - I’ve heard lots of rumors involving a famous angler using simliar methods involving a one time state record Brown …. unconfirmed of course

The Aberdeen Proving Grounds for just about all of my "Scratching the Hatch" patterns was The Run...

Back in the day, those fish would take anything because people threw just about everything in the water to see what they would eat.

One day in particular there was a kid there throwing bread in the Run. I can't remember if that section was Catch & Release Artificial's Only back then, but I quickly put on a white marabou streamer and was clobbering the fish.

After that I worked on my Bread Flies. 😉

The day I caught the duck I was field testing my French Fry Fly and the ducks were going ballistic chasing it figuring I was feeding them. One was quicker than me.

I also used to fish for bats with "hook-less" Sulphurs under the street lights in the parking lot... 😉
